Norman A. Davis

BRUNSWICK -- Norman A. Davis of Harpswell, and Sarasota, Fla., died Aug. 8, 2007, at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick after a valiant, decade-long battle with COPD and asbestosis. He was 80.

Born in Brunswick on Dec. 20, 1926, he was the seventh of 12 children of Myer and Sara (Sadie) Davis. Davis graduated from Brunswick High School in 1944, and then went to the Maine Maritime Academy where he completed the four-year curriculum in two years, graduating in the Engineering class of 1946. He went to sea as a Merchant Marine from 1946 to 1948, then returned to Brunswick to attend Bowdoin College for a year. He returned to sea from 1949 to 1954, joined the U.S. Navy from 1954 to 1955, and went back to sea again from 1955 to 1959.

He finally came ashore in 1960 and opened the Rustic Cabin on Union Street, a popular local bar that he owned and operated for 10 years. When he sold the business in 1972, he opened Norman A. Davis Real Estate in Topsham. While in the real estate business, he was the driving force behind creation of the Brunswick area's first multiple listing service (MLS) which became known as the Merrymeeting MLS. He retired from real estate in 1992.

Active in his community, he was a member of the Kiwanis, Rotary, Masons, American Legion Post 202 in Topsham, and the local Chamber of Commerce, serving on its board of directors. He also served on a Town of Brunswick committee that was convened to rewrite the town's charter.

The welfare of children was important to him. He served as chairman of the original group that initiated the Fourth of July activities for children at the Brunswick mall, a tradition that continues to this day, and he opted to forego the annual holiday party held by his fellow real estate brokers and instead adopted a needy family for whom he bought gifts and the food for their holiday dinner.

Sandra J. Delano

Bowdoinham-Sandra J. (Temple) DeLano, 54, of Bowdoinham lost her battle with cancer on July 26, 2007 at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick, surrounded by her loving family. Sandi was the youngest daughter of Milton, Sr and Ina (Irish) Temple, born May 24, 1953 at Gardiner General Hospital. She attended Bowdoinham Community School and Brunswick High School.

The happiest years of Sandi's life, since the birth of her two sons, was after she began dating the love of her life; David M. DeLano. After dating for ten months they were married on September 20, 1997. David introduced her to many activities that she loved. Most of all she enjoyed the summers spent on their houseboat. She was in her glory out on Merrymeeting Bay, fishing, relaxing, and cooking meals for themselves and their friends. In the later years once Sandi and David built their home behind her parents home, she enjoyed many days in her favorite spot on the porch throughout the four seasons. She also enjoyed their trips to Florida, spending time with her two granddaughters, collecting lighthouse items, pink flamingos, anything with palm trees, and her crusade to find a bigger turkey each year for Thanksgiving.

Sandi was outspoken and strong willed. She had a down-to-earth sense of humor and an infectious laugh that drew so many people to love her; more than she will ever know.

Sandi was predeceased by her siblings Milton R. Temple, Jr in 1978 and Mary A. (Temple) Linn in 1992. She is survived by her loving husband David, of Bowdoinham; her parents Milton, Sr and Ina Temple, of Bowdoinham; her sons Timothy A. Merrill, Jr and his wife, Jen, of Litchfield, Solon A. George G. Sidelinger

DRESDEN -- George G. Sidelinger, 84, passed away on Wednesday, April 25, 2007, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta, after a short illness.

He was born Nov. 23, 1922, in Wollaston, Mass., a son of Roy and Margaret (Chandler) Sidelinger.

At the age of 14, George knew that, when he grew up, he wanted to get married, have children and own a small dairy farm.

He was a 1941 graduate of the Norfolk City Agricultural School in Walpole, Mass. (known as "the Aggie"). He next went to Stockbridge School of Agriculture at the University of Massachusetts for two years, studying practical agriculture, graduating in 1943.

After working during the day at a local farm, dad would ride his bike to Amherst Center where the big houses were, mowing lawns and weeding gardens until dark. On the way home one night he met our mother, Charlotte, and her twin brother, Paul, who were going to an Odd Fellows Hall dance, and our mother invited dad.

Dad said he was tired but would think about it. He left the two of them and was peddling faster, got home, changed and went back to the Odd Fellows Hall and found our mother. They danced and then took a walk. He put his arm around her. Mom thought he was pretty fast. Shortly after that, he said he had to go, and left. Mom thought she would never see him again.

They were married on June 20, 1943, in Wollaston, and were married for 62 years. She passed away on Oct. 17, 2005. She was the love of his life.

George served in the Army from May 1944 through November 1946. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge in World War II.

In June 1950, George and Charlotte bought a small dairy farm in Dresden, later named it Velvet Acres and raised three children, fulfilling his childhood dream.

He also ran his own rubbish route and for more than 20 years was a night watchman for the state of Maine, retiring in 1986. From 1983 through 1996, he was building inspector and code enforcement officer for the town of Dresden.

George enjoyed spending time at home with Charlotte and had many hobbies, which included collecting miniature cars, photographing big rig trucks, model railroading, John Deere tractors and Model-A Fords.

He is survived by three children, Ken Sidelinger and companion Vicky Mastantuono, of Michigan, Jean Genthner and husband, Ted, of Velvet Acres, Dresden, and Peter Sidelinger and wife, Mary, of Pennsylvania; his brother, John "Jack" Sidelinger of Arizona; eight grandchildren, Vincent Sidelinger and wife, Rhonda, of Lewiston, Craig Dorr and wife, Sandy, of Augusta, Joanna Black and husband, Toby, of Auburn, Jeromy Sidelinger and wife, Jennifer, of New Hampton, N.H., Jeffrey Sidelinger of Webster, N.Y., Shannon Fleming and husband, Ryan, of Portland, and Amanda and Daniel Sidelinger of Michigan. George also is survived by seven great-grandchildren, a niece, two nephews and cousins.

He will also be missed by his devoted cat, Missy.

The family wishes to thank Drs. Chang, Healey, Magioncalda and Scharf, and the nursing staff of MaineGeneral in Augusta and HealthReach Hospice, for their care and compassion during our father's illness.

At George's request, there will be no visiting hours or funeral. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.

Friends are invited to share remembrances with the family from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 28, at Velvet Acres.
