Pittston-Samuel E. Trussell, 95, of Wiscasset Rd. passed away on Wednesday, December 6, 2006 at Veterans Administration Medical Center, Togus.

He was born on September 21, 1911 in Dresden the son of Wilmot and Nina (Johnson) Trussell.

Sam proudly served his country in the United States Army during WWII. He was a self employed farmer his entire life.

Sam was a member of the Dresden Methodist Church, Dresden Grange and the Dresden Masonic Lodge.

He enjoyed writing poems in his earlier years, baseball, animals, and past Capt. of the Church baseball team. Sam was also the Valedictorian of his class at the Bridge Academy in Dresden.

He was predeceased by his parents and several Brothers and Sisters. Sam is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years Alice Trussell of Dresden, children Sharon Rackliff of Dresden, Linda Parks of Pittston, Cheryl Bruno and her husband Paul of Union, Beverly Acord and her Husband Michael of Pittston, Mike Trussell and his wife Maureen of Waterville, 12 Grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A graveside service will take place on Monday, December 11th at 1pm at Forest Hill Cemetery in Dresden.

Richmond-James D. Nason, 82, of the Alexander Reed Rd. Passed away on November 23, 2006 at Amenity Manor in Topsham.

He was born in Canaan on May 28, 1924 the son of Grover and Etta (Bragg) Nason.

Jim proudly served his country on the Army Air Corp. During WWII.

He worked for himself for over 50 years as an automobile mechanic and body shop repairman.

Jim enjoyed working with his hands and on cars. He especially enjoyed time spent with family.

Jim was predeceased by his parents, sister’s Gwen Costella, Mary Laprise, brother’s Clayton and Chester Nason. He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years Marjorie Nason of Richmond, son Gary Nason and his wife Carolyn of Richmond, sister Eileen Booker of Clinton, grandchildren Katherine Girma, Penny Simpson, great grandchildren Adam, Leah, Jenna and several nieces.

A celebration of life will take place on Sunday, December 17th at 1pm at Kincer Funeral Home with Pastor Farley officiating and military honors. Burial will take place in Maine Veterans Cemetery.

Topsham-Edward G. Melanson, 85, of River Rd. Bowdoinham passed away on Saturday, November 18, 2006 at Amenity Manor.

He was born on April 25, 1921 in Corberrie, Nova Scotia, the son of Peter and Alma (Amirault) Melanson.

Although he spent a lifetime as a carpenter, Ed spent 4 years in the Canadian Navy serving on the HMCS Joliette and HMS Nipigon Naval Ships. He also worked for the National Research Council in Ottawa, co-owned Melanson Brothers Construction in Wilbraham, Massachusetts and Friendship Motor Inn in Old Orchard Beach.

Ed enjoyed woodworking, hunting, fishing, gardening and just being an outdoorsman.

He was predeceased by his parents and 5 siblings. Ed was survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Corinne Melanson of Topsham, daughter Gail Shears of Fairport, New York, granddaughter Kimberly Shears of Middletown, Connecticut, brother John Melanson and his wife Verna of Canada, several nieces, nephews, and many friends.

Mt. Holly, N.J. - Gerald N. Seigars, 69, of Richmond, died on Saturday, November 4, 2006, in Mt. Holly, New Jersey.

Gerald was born on January 11, 1937, the son of Albert John and Alice Plummer (Trask) Seigars. Gerald attended Richmond schools. On September 3, 1955 he married June C. Fossett. He worked for Ernest Purinton in Richmond for 18 years before beginning his own construction company; Gerald Seigars Trucking in 1973.

Gerald loved meeting and helping people, country music, antique equipment, boating, horse pulling and wintering in Florida. He was a member of many organizations including Village Lodge #26 A.F & A.M., Lebanon chapter #8, ME Commandry #1, Kora Shrine Temple, Kora Karts, Merrymeeting Shrine Club, Kennebec Valley Shrine Club, Pine Tree Truck Association, Highland Village Mobile Home Assoc., and the American Antique Truck Association. He was also the past President of the Lions Club and past President of the Conrad Mobile Home Association down in Florida.

Gerald was predeceased by his parents, son Stephen Lee Seigars in 1994, brothers Clayton, Earl, Albert, Robert and Raymond, and a sister Marion Lilly.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years June, son Gerald Seigars Jr. and wife Carol of Dresden, daughters; Patricia Deer and husband Carl Wayne of FL, Kathleen Seigars of Richmond, daughter in law KathyRae Beckwith of Monmouth, brothers; Guy D. Brunswick-Deborah A. Seigars, 39, of Mill St. passed away unexpectedly, Wednesday, October 18, 2006 at her residence.

She was born in Gardiner on July 4, 1967 the daughter of Raymond and Sylvia (James) Seigars.

Deborah enjoyed helping others, knitting, shopping for her unborn grandchild, going to the movies, spending time with her nieces and nephews. She continually worked towards being the best she could be.

BOWDOINHAM — Diana Coe Berry Rudloe, 68, died Friday, Sept. 29, 2006, in her childhood home in Bowdoinham surrounded by her family.

She was born in Boston on March 18, 1938, the daughter of Ledlie and Priscilla Berry of Merrymeeting Farm in Bowdoinham. Her godparents were Robert Peter Tristam Coffin and Virginia Gilles.

In 1993, she was diagnosed with a serious autoimmune liver disease. She kept this disease at bay with a positive attitude and by combining traditional western medicine with Chinese healing arts.

She touched the lives of hundreds of immigrant and refugee students in the Portland Public Schools' Multilingual and Multicultural Center for a quarter of a century. Beginning in 1981, she set up the structure of the English as a Second Language program at both the elementary and middle school levels and helped to develop ESL curriculum and materials. Most recently, she was the lead coordinator of ESL testing and assessment in the district. She was known for her encyclopedic knowledge of her specialty and was a role model and mentor for new ESL teachers across the country.

She received her training through the University of Michigan; The English Language Institute in Florence, Italy; and the Boston University NDEA Institute for Teachers of ESL. She was a graduate of the Emma Willard boarding school. She received a bachelor's degree, cum laude, from Brown University as an English literature major. She held a master's degree in elementary education with a concentration in reading from Antioch University.

She lived and worked in Italy for two years, where she received a language scholarship from the Italian government and began her teaching career.

She will be remembered for her grace, charm and style.

She is survived by a daughter, Stephanie Rudloe of New York City; a son, Isaac Rudloe and his wife, Tiffany, of New Orleans, La.,; and two brothers and their families, Bruce Berry and David Berry of Bowdoinham

A memorial service was held Sunday.

She was born in New Haven Ct. the daughter of the late Frank and Priscilla (Ambrose) Miller of Connecticut and Walter P. Rice of Maine on January 10, 1928.

She is survived by daughters Priscilla Zweifel of Florida, Lisa Humphries of Texas, sons Gene Spillane of Florida, Bill Dunn of Connecticut, sister Marion White of Bath, brothers Steve Miller of Florida, Harvey Rice of Bowdoinham, William Rice of Alna, Wilfred Rice of Woolwich, 7 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by 4 sisters and six brothers.

RICHMOND-Donna M. (Baker) Crosman, age 61, died on Friday, September 22, 2006 at her home on Hideaway Lane in Richmond after a four-month battle with pancreatic cancer.

She was born in Bath, Maine and lived on the Barley Neck Road in Woolwich, Maine with her parents, Kenneth and Madeline "Hilda" Baker.

She graduated from Woolwich Elementary School, Bath Jr. High School, Morse High School (Class of 1962) and from Gorham State Teachers College with her husband, Richard, in 1966. On June 18, 1966 she married Richard Crosman of Topsham, Maine.

Donna held several positions as a teacher and later as a guidance counselor in MSAD #40. First as a science teacher, then after an 8-year hiatus while she raised her daughters, as a 5th grade teacher at Miller Grade School in Waldoboro. She later taught at A.D. Gray Junior High before taking a sabbatical to earn her Masters Degree in school counseling. After 25 years in public education, she retired and began a successful antique business with her husband.

During the summers Donna joined her husband in buying and selling nautical items off their front lawn on Route #1 in Waldoboro for over 20 years. This part-time venture led to Dick and Donna creating D & D Collectibles which allowed them to travel all over the state to auctions and sell antiques and collectibles at the Rockland Marketplace Antique Shop as well as on eBay, which they both enjoyed doing very much.

In the summer of 2002 she and Dick moved to Richmond to be closer to the grandchildren and other family members. One of Donna’s favorite activities was to have large, extended family cookouts where she could watch the grandchildren enjoying their swimming pool.

She was predeceased by her mother, Madeline (Henderson) Baker in 1995; and her youngest sister, Janice (Baker) Dodd in 2004. She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Richard; by daughter Kimberly Quirion, son-in-law Keith, and grandchildren Rachel and Tyler, all of Randolph; and daughter Kari Crosman of Richmond. Other survivors include her father, Kenneth Baker of Woolwich; brother-in-law, Don Dodd of Woolwich; her sister, Toni Bryant of Harpswell;and sister Barbara Billings and husband, Russell, of Woolwich. She is further survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins and many, many friends.

An Internment Service will be held in the Chapel at the new Maine Veterans’ Cemetery on the Mt. Vernon Road in Augusta at 2pm on Thursday, September 28th. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 30th, at 11am at the Kincer Funeral Home. Following the Memorial Service friends and family are invited for refresments provided by the ladies of Unit #132 Auxiliary at the Emerson & Lane Post #132, American Legion Hall, on the Carding Machine Road in Richmond.

He was f born in Randolph, on June 30, 1917 the son of Merle and Marion Townes and attended local schools.

He enjoyed Gardening, (grew cantaloupes this year successfully in his garden & devoured them while hospitalized ) Cooking, ( could make some awesome corn chowder ) Carpentry projects ( house repairs and renovations ), and was a gifted mechanic ( took an outboard motor apart once piece by piece, and put it back together again; it worked better than it did originally- when it was new).

Carl was awarded a Silver Badge by The Grand Lodge of the International Association of Machinists & Aerospace Workers for 25 years of loyal service.

He worked for Bath Iron Works and Pejepscot Paper Company where he was a Machine Shop Foreman.

Carl was predeceased by his loving wife Martha

He is survived by a devoted son, Bradford Townes and his wife Mary of Richmond, daughter, Pamela Gartley and her husband Bill of Tacoma Lake and 3 Grandchildren and 4 Great-Grandchildren.

Bowdoinham-M. Evelyn Heath Riske, 95, of Bay Rd. passed away Monday, September 18, 2006 at Freeport Nursing Home, Freeport

She was born in Bowdoinham on October 28, 1910 the daughter of Andrew and Mary (Webber) Heath. She was a life long resident of Bowdoinham.

In her early years she delivered mail from the rail road depot to the Bowdoinham Post Office and later on in her life she was a social worker for the State of Maine working in Bowdoinham and surrounding towns.

Evelyn was active in the Bowdoinham Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary for many years, serving alongside her husband George E. Ackley who was Bowdoinham’s Fire Chief for 18 years. She was a member of the Eastern Star Electa Chapter #2 in Bowdoinham serving in the position of Esther for many years. She was also, a member of the Pythian Sisters, the Grange, and the Second Baptist Church. Evelyn was also the recipient of the Boston Post Cane.

She enjoyed being at home with family and friends.

Evelyn was predeceased by her parents, her first husband George E. Ackley and second husband W. Almon Riske, brothers Fred, Frank and Herbert Heath. She was born in Brunswick on August 27, 1981 the daughter of Polly Christie of Topsham and Tommy Carter of Sabattus. She attended Brunswick grade schools, Libby Tozier in Litchfield, Oak Hill HS, Cony, Graduating from Bangor HS and Penobscot Job Corp Culinary Arts.

Nikki enjoyed family and friends, cats Beetle & Moey and walking her dog Brutus. Loved Music, hanging out with her friends and laughing. Her smile and laugh lite up the room and warmed our hearts.

Dresden-Edward L. "Ted" Pickard, died at Glenridge Rehabilitation Center on Saturday, September 9, 2006 after a Long illness.

He was born March 5, 1932 in Boston, Mass. the son of Mildred Lawrensen and John F. Pickard.

Ted was a graduate of Gardiner Area High School in 1950, Coburn Classical Institute, Waterville in 1951, Leicester Junior College in 1954 with an AS Degree. He was a member of the Kappa Delta Phi Fraternity while at Farmington State Teachers College and graduated in 1965.

He was employed in the Sales Tax Division of the State of Maine for several years; He left and entered the YMCA field after graduating from college. He worked in the Augusta YMCA, then moved to Gloversville, NY where he was employed at the YMCA for seven years and then trans­ferred to Lawrence, Mass for over five years there. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club both in Gloversville, NY and Lawrence, MA. Ted was employed by the Exeter School System for a short time and then was hired as Assistant Director of Recreation for the Town of Seabrook, NH for over twelve years, retiring in 1997.

Ted moved to Dresden where he volunteered in the Athletic Department of Dresden Elementary School. He had also volunteered as a coach in Christ Episcopal Church Basketball League, Gardiner, and for several years as a coach of Gardiner Little League and assistant coach in the Wiscasset Recreation Dept.

Ted and Dotty were married in Dresden on October 9, 1960. He is survived by his wife of 45 years Dorothy Hall Pickard of Dresden, a daughter Lynette Gagnon and her husband Mike three grandchildren Chad, Hannah, and Hunter of Somersworth, NH; sister Joyce Camp and her husband Ted of Kennebunkport, several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was godfather to Vera L . Spurrier of Virginia Beach, VA; and Mary Tisi of Newcomb, NY.

Upon her graduation from Richmond High School, Louise worked in manufacturing for several years. On April 20, 1946, she married Wilber A. Cooper of Richmond.

Louise was a lifelong member of the Richmond Methodist Church (now known as the Dresden-Richmond United Methodist Church), where she taught Sunday school and Bible School. She enjoyed local history, Maine artists, poetry, gardening, sewing, baking, knitting, and bird-watching.

Louise was predeceased by two sisters, Eleanor and Norma, and two brothers, Stanley and Oscar.

Survivors include a son, Alvin R. Cooper of Ballston Spa, New York, a daughter, Carolyn Cooper Case of Brunswick, Maine, six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

CHELSEA -- On Aug. 26, 2006, Brian Carroll Lamoreau passed away at home, surrounded by his family, after a long and valiant battle with pancreatic cancer.

He was predeceased by his grandmother, Eula Terrell; his father, Arnold Lamoreau; his uncle, "Spike" Arthur Terrell; his uncle, Professor Carroll Terrell; and his sister-in-law, Helen Taber.

He was born on May 23, 1943, to Arnold Lamoreau and Glenys Terrell Lamoreau, and raised in Richmond. As a youth, he performed in school bands, glee club and plays. In high school, he played varsity football and baseball. Outside of school, he worked in his uncle's store and hung out with his friends. Throughout his life, Brian was the drummer for various rock and country bands.

In 1966, he proudly answered the call from his country and served in the Army until 1968. He enjoyed telling stories of his time stationed in Germany.

As a civilian, Brian served the American Legion for 33 years at Post 132 in Richmond and Post 205 in Augusta, and the Voiture Locale 308/40 & Eight of Augusta for 10 years.

He was honored to be in the color guard and especially enjoyed providing cadence in parades. He became known as Brian "Bingo" Lamoreau for his perseverance in establishing and maintaining bingo for Augusta Post 205. Brian didn't even miss bingo the week of the Windsor Fair, where he sold sealed tickets. He loved the camaraderie of the "Windsor Fair Crew."

In 1968, Brian met his wife of 36 years, Ellen French. They developed an instantaneous connection and commitment to each other and were married in December 1969. Brian always worked hard to provide for his family, and no one could ever doubt that nothing was more important than family.

He is survived by his wife, Ellen Lamoreau; his mother, Glenys Lamoreau Brice; his brother, Lowell Lamoreau; his sister, Marilyn Stinson and her husband, Bradley; his three daughters, Tracy Brown and her fiancé, Michael Emond, Holli Pullen and her husband, David, and Heidi Lamoreau and her companion, Stacey Bernier; his son-in-law, John Ferguson; his son, Michael Lamoreau; his grandchildren; his great-grandchildren and two grandpuppies.

He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Merle French and wife Mary; his brothers-in-law, James French, Sam French, Thomas French and John Taber; his sisters-in-law, Judith French and Nancy French; as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews, on both sides of the family.

His warm heart, his easygoing style, and his sense of humor kept Brian surrounded by friends his entire life. He touched many lives and will be truly missed forever.

The family extends its sincerest appreciation for the care and support Brian received at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center at Togus, MaineGeneral Medical Center of Augusta and HealthReach Homecare and Hospice.

A visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 29, at the Richmond Grange Hall. A graveside funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 30, at the Litchfield Cemetery and a celebration of life at the Richmond Grange Hall will immediately follow the funeral.

Richmond-Roger S. Gibbs, 78, of Main St. passed away unexpectedly Thursday, August 24, 2006 at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta.

He was born on August 23, 1928 in Wiscasset the son of George and Mary (Stewart) Gibbs.

Roger attended Richmond Schools. He proudly served our country in the United States Navy during WW II. Upon returning to Maine he worked as a Millwright Supervisor for Ames Textile in Richmond, S.D. Warren Co. in Gardiner, and Scott Paper in Westbrook, where he retired in 1983.

Ozzie was a member of the American Legion Post 132 and past member of the Masons. He was a selectman for the town of Richmond and a Boy Scout Leader. He also served on the School Board and Utilities committees.

Ozzie was an avid Bowler, Snowmobiler, Hunter and Boater. He owned a camp on Aziscohos Lake in Rangeley.

Roger was predeceased by his parents, beloved wife Rowena B. Gibbs and daughter Mary F. Gibbs. He is survived by his son’s Roger P. Gibbs and wife Denise of Richmond, Peter J Gibbs and companion Nancy Fortin of Richmond, Georgia D. Hamlin and husband Orris of West Gardiner, brothers George Stewart of N.C., Robert Gibbs of Florida, five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Richmond-Pelahija Ponomarenko Tarasenko, 83, of Alexander-Reed Rd. passed away on Wednesday, August 16, 2006 at the Hospice House in Auburn.

She was born in the Ukrain on October 17, 1922 the daughter of Serhij and Motrona Puholwko.

Pelahija enjoyed gardening and her flowers.

She arrived in the United States in 1950 from Germany, her family escaping communism.

Pelahija worked in assembly at Clarostat in Richmond for many years.

She was predeceased by her parents, first husband Semen Ponomarenko, and second husband Pawlo Tarasenko. Pelahija is survived by her children Boris Ponomarenko and his wife Karin of Westbrook, Eugenia Canterbury and her husband Bob of Wisconsin, sisters Kathrina Samarsky of New York, Anna Mychalczuk of New York, grandchildren Laurissa and Alisa Ponomarenko, Dan, Mike, and Steve Canterbury, and 12 great grandchildren.

A funeral Service will take place on Friday, August 18th at 9am at St. Alexander Nevsky Orthodox Church, Richmond. Burial will follow in Richmond Cemetery.

Richmond-Francis X. Meier, 69, passed away Saturday, August 12, 2006 at a Portland Hospital after a long illness with his family at his side.

He was born in Elizabeth, NJ on October 24, 1936 the son of Franz & Madeline Meier. Francis grew up and attended schools in Elizabeth, NJ.

He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1954 and was stationed overseas for over three years in Freising, Germany where he met his future wife and the mother of his children.

Francis enjoyed fishing, boating and especially being near the ocean.

He was predeceased by his parents, brothers James F. Meier and George Meier.

Survivors include daughters Andrea Meier of Richmond, Marlene Meier and her companion PoYat Ng of South Orange, NJ, Madelyn Meier and her companion Ron Copp of Cumberland, Me and Susanne Adams and her husband Stephen of Inverness, FL. sons Robert Meier and his wife Nelvida of Aransas Pass, TX and Francis X. Meier, Jr. and his companion Mary Olivas of Tampa, FL., grandchildren Kristy, Lana, Raeni, Belkis, Victor and David, several nieces and nephews.

Richmond-Kathryn M. Zottoli, 48, of Front St. died on Tuesday, August 8, 2006 at home. .

She was born in Lunenburg, MA. On December 24, 1957 the daughter of Daniel and Bertha (Rill) Andrews. Kathy was a 1975 graduate of Lunenburg High School.

She was a certified nurse’s assistant and director for over thirty years, most recently working at Sunnybrook Village in Brunswick.

Kathryn was predeceased by her parents Daniel in 1985 and Bertha in 1997. Her son Mark D. Conroy in 1992 and sister Karen Andrews in 1955.

Kathryn is survived by her loving husband Robert Zottoli of Richmond, Daughters Julie (Conroy) Albert of Merrimack, NH, Katrina Bergevin of New Haven, CT., step children Amber and Sharree Zottoli of Richmond, brothers Martin Andrews of Leominster, MA., Daniel Andrews of Manchester, NH, aunt Edna Sheppard of Fitchburg, MA., uncles Arnold Rill and Herbert Rill of Lunenburg, MA. Ernest Rill of Trenton, N. J., two nieces, and three grand children Megan Kathryn, Benjamin James, and Lauren Jean Albert, of Merrimack, N. H.

Litchfield-Dale W. Cook, 71, of Hallowell Rd. passed away on Monday, July 31, 2006 at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta.

He was born in Gardiner on February 15, 1935 the son of Linwood and Arline (Dale) Cook and attended local schools.

Dale started his working career as a mechanic for Dick Levitt of Gardiner, over 25 years for Bridge Construction of Windsor and finished his career as the Public Safety Dispatcher for Gardiner.

Dale was a longtime member of Morning Star Masonic Lodge #41 in Litchfield and the Litchfield Grange. He was a past member of the Litchfield Fire Department and past part time police officer Litchfield.

Dale enjoyed playing his guitar, riding horses and particularly his grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents and brother in-law James Connor. Dale is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years Marlene Cook of Litchfield, son’s Daniel Cook and his Fiancee’ Debora Collins of Wayne, Scott Cook of Texas, daughter Kathleen Hilchey and husband Fred of Litchfield, sister Joan Connor of Litchfield, brother Dana Cook and his wife Nancy of Litchfield, grandchildren Chassidy and Makayla Hilchey and Kelsey Collins.

Dresden ME – DORE, Betty JN – passed away July 30, 2006 at Maine General Medical Center after a brief illness.

She was born in Blaine, Maine on August 7, 1928 to David D. & Lillian Noble.

A long-time resident of Dresden and devoted wife to Charlie, she loved gardening, cooking, lawn-saleing, the neighborhood children, and her grandchildren.

Betty was a switchboard operator with “Ma Bell,” a homemaker, wife & mother, and held many positions with the Postal Service, retiring in 1989. She also did the bookkeeping for her husband’s businesses in Richmond and Dresden, Maine.

She is predeceased by her husband of almost 57 years, Charles Dore; her parents, and two brothers.

She is survived by two children, David and his wife Tymbre Dore of Richmond, Maine, Lynne McKenney of Randolph, Maine; a brother, Norman Noble of Bowdoinham, Maine; three grandchildren, Nathan and Bryan Dore, both of Richmond, Maine, and Christopher McKenney and his wife Lisa of San Antonio, Texas; six and a half great-grandchildren, Darien McKenney, Brandon Frank, Chelsea Frank, Mary McKenney, Alexis Clark, Jacob McKenney and Olivia McKenney (due in October), all of San Antonio, Texas; one aunt, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

BRUNSWICK — Rosalie Chase Hoyt, 92, an emeritus professor of physics at Bryn Mawr College, died at her home in Brunswick on Tuesday, July 25, 2006.

Born May 20, 1914, she grew up in Commack on Long Island, N.Y. She graduated from the Chapin School in New York City, attended Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania from 1932 to 1934, received her bachelor's degree in physics from Barnard College and returned to Bryn Mawr as a graduate student.

Professor Albano wrote, "There was no biophysics program at Bryn Mawr College when Rosalie Hoyt went there for graduate work. So, she invented one for herself." Upon receiving her Ph.D. from Bryn Mawr in 1945, she worked at the University of Rochester for three years as an instructor in physics. She joined the Bryn Mawr Physics Department in 1948 and stayed there until her retirement in 1982. She was a pioneering woman scientist in a field dominated by men, becoming an accomplished biophysicist and teacher. She authored many scholarly articles on biophysical processes in nerve fibers. Her colleague, Bryn Mawr Professor Emeritus Alfonso Albano, observed that "Rosalie was one of the very few women holding tenured positions in physics in the country. In the 1960s she was one of only approximately 10 women who held full professorships." She was chairwoman of the Bryn Mawr Physics Department from 1969 to 1977, the principal investigator on several National Institutes of Health and National Science Foundation research grants, and a coauthor or contributor to several college texts. In 1969, she received the Lindback Foundation Award for distinguished teaching.

Upon retirement in 1982, she moved to Parker Head in Phippsburg, where she was active in Bath Area Citizens for Nuclear Arms Control, founded by her late sister, Nancy Hoyt St. John. In 1999, she moved to the Thornton Oaks retirement community in Brunswick. As her chronic pulmonary disease decreased her mobility, she remained intellectually active, connected to the world through her computer. Her bulletin board, e-mails and conversation were full of her concern for global climate change and the doings of her nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews and their dogs.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Nancy Hoyt St. John and Barbara Hoyt Stokes.

She is survived by her brother, Edwin Chase Hoyt Jr. and his wife, Lydia, of Brunswick; 13 nieces and nephews and their spouses and partners, including Christopher St. John and his wife, Eunice, of Gardiner and Barbara St. John Vickery and her husband, Peter, of Richmond; and numerous grandnieces, grandnephews, great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews.

It was her expressed wish that there be no service. The family will be remembering her privately.

Coopers Mills, Maine-Lorry I. Flood, 41, of Farmingdale, Maine and Ladson, S.C. passed away on Wednesday, July 19, 2006 after a long illness in the presence of friends and loved ones.

He was born on February 14, 1965 in Freeport, the son of Lorry and Martha (Sicard) Flood.

Skip leaves behind memories of laughter, good times camping, fishing and making every birthday party the best for his children.

He would speak often of growing up in Freeport and the times running around L.L. Bean which was just across the street.

Skip was an artist in every aspect of his life and his talents laughter and love for life will always be remembered.

He was predeceased by his mother, father and brother Stephen Flood. Freeport-Pauline Vosmus, 76, of Pownal Rd. died on Tuesday, July 18, 2006 at the Bodwell House, Brunswick. Polly fought a long and courageous battle with cancer.

She was born in Freeport the daughter of Edward R. and Martha Fowler Litchfield on April 3, 1930. Polly was educated in Freeport Schools graduating from Freeport High School in 1948. Through the years Polly kept close contact with all her of her classmates.

She enjoyed boating in Casco Bay with her family and friends. Polly also loved cooking, quilting and going to yard sales. She especially loved spending time with her family and watching her grandchildren play sports.

Polly is survived by her loving husband of 56 years Kenneth L. Vosmus of Freeport, sons Kirk T. and wife JoAnn Vosmus of Brunswick and Kenneth F. “Bump” and his wife Paula Vosmus of Bowdoin, grandchildren Heather, Shawn, Kyle, Keith, Sarah, Ted, great grandson Nathan and a sister Elizabeth Litchfield of Durham.

Richmond-Vera Matveev, 78, of River Rd. passed away on Sunday, July16, 2006 at Graybrich Nursing Home, Augusta.

She was born on January 22, 1928 in the Ukrain.

Vera was a member of the Richmond Dresden Methodist Church. She enjoyed her vegetable garden and going to the ocean.

Vera arrived in America in 1956 and in 2004 became a United States Citizen.

Upon arrival to the United States she went to work at Marcel Paper in Patterson, New Jersey. Once she moved to Maine, Vera worked for Gorham Nursing Home in Pittston, Stinson’s Cannery in Bath and raising chickens with her husband for Cohan Poultry in Augusta.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband Nick Matveev. Vera is survived by her daughter Roberta Bragg and her husband Roland of Wales, two grandchildren Lisa Robichaud of Lewiston, Danny Bragg of Wales, 3 great grandchildren Brittany Robichaud, McKenzie Bragg and Zachary Robichaud.

He was born in Lewiston on December 12, 1925 the son of Henry and Beatrice (Lessard) Robert.

Roger proudly served his country in the United States Army during WWII.

He was a member of the Richmond American Legion Post #132. Roger enjoyed Dancing, being in the woods, political banter and particularly time spent with his family.

Richmond, Maine-Craig Matteson, 57, of Kimball St. and formerly of Chatham, Massachusetts, passed away on Thursday, July 6, 2006 at his residence.

He was born on April 6, 1949 in Hyannis, Massachusetts, the son of the late Kenneth and Helen Matteson.

He was educated in the Chatham schools and was a 1968 graduate of Barnstable vocational school. Craig was employed by Kenny’s Boatyard and Crosby’s Boatyard on Cape Cod. He also designed boats for Sample’s Boatyard in Boothbay Harbor and for Boston Whaler in Norton Mass.

Craig will be remembered for his sense of humor and his love of children, pets, and the sea.

He is survived by 3 sons; David of Washington, NH, Scott of Burlington, VT, and Curtis of Richmond , ME, and one daughter Elizabeth of Cranston, RI, two brothers, Thomas of Bailey Island, ME and Kenneth of Tampa, FL, one sister and brother in-law Betsy and Mark Crowell of Litchfield, ME., 9 grandchildren and two very special and beloved nieces, Aleta Cugno of Bowdoin, ME and Hollie Crowell of Orr’s Island, ME. She was born on January 15, 1917 in Lisbon Falls the daughter of Guy and Hazel (Clark) Ladd.

Thelma was a longtime member of the Church of the Nazarene in Richmond. She enjoyed shopping, traveling, cooking, the Red Sox and particularly time spent raising her family.

Thelma was predeceased by her beloved husband Ralph Pinkham Jr., parents Hazel and Guy Ladd, son Maurice Pinkham, brothers Arthur Ladd and Ted Ladd. She was born in Upton, Wyo., on July 26, 1904, the daughter of Otis and Clara (West) Sheldon.

Opal was a member of AARP. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, raising her 11 children, keeping house, and raising half the town of Richmond. Opal also worked as a school teacher in Wyoming in earlier years.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Nelson Pickett, in 1951; and son Walter Pickett. Opal is survived by children Catherine Pickett of Wyoming, Nancy Havens of Texas, Anita Meserve of Richmond, Cora Gardner of Richmond, Clara Trussell of Pittston, Nelson Pickett of Wyoming, Orrin Pickett of Wyoming, Richard Pickett of Richmond, Donald Pickett of Pittston and Peter Pickett of Richmond; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Family and friends are invited to visit on Monday, July 10, from 1 to 2 p.m., with a funeral service commencing at 2 p.m., at Kincer Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Richmond Cemetery.

NORTH ATTLEBORO, Mass. -- Marilyn Anne (Pierson) Brown, 76, of North Washington Street died Wednesday, June 28, 2006, in Our Lady of Fatima Hospital, North Providence, R.I. She was the wife of the late Robert E. Brown Sr., who died in 2002.

Born Jan. 6, 1930, in Quincy, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Marion (Bancroft) Pierson. Mrs. Brown was a graduate of Gardiner High School, Gardiner, Maine. She then attended Kennebec School of Business.

Marilyn, fondly known by some as "Brownie," began her nursing career as a licensed practical nurse for the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health at the Foxboro State Hospital. She was a 1971 graduate of Massasoit Community College, Brockton, Mass., receiving an associate's degree in nursing. After becoming a registered nurse she was employed by Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro, and Maples Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Wrentham.

Mrs. Brown was a volunteer in every sense of the word and through her gift of nursing and voluteerism she touched many lives. She volunteered for the Serve Program in North Attleboro, Food N' Friends Soup Kitchen held in the Grace Episcopal Church, North Attleboro Town Hall and the Maples Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was a member of the North Attleboro Council on Aging, currently serving as secretary, and was a very active member of the First Baptist Church, North Attleboro. She was an avid reader and enjoyed knitting, bingo and the New York Giants. Her greatest joy were her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and spending time with family and friends.

She was fortunate to have many of those friends and family in Maine as well, spending many summers there, maintaining residences in Richmond and Belgrade Lakes.

Most recently she enjoyed the summers at her son's home on Cobbossee Lake in Winthrop, Maine.

She is survived by a daughter, Bette L. Bristow, of North Attleboro and a son, Robert E. Brown Jr., of Winthrop; sister Shirley Manson of North Attleboro, Faylene and her husband, Lewis York, of Tulsa, Okla., Robert Pierson of North Attleboro and Francis and his wife, Phyllis Pierson, of North Attleboro; grandchildren Jennifer and Amanda Brown, Stacy (Bristow) Forte, Caitlin Bristow, and Ryan and Andrea Brown; great-grandchildren Brandon Bristow, and Emily and Tyson Forte; also several nieces and nephews.

She was the mother of the late Michael E. and Kathryn Brown and sister of the late Thomas and Michael Pierson.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on July 5 at the Kincer Funeral Home, 14 Church St., Richmond, Maine. Burial will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 6, in the new Maine Veterans Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta, Maine.

RICHMOND -- James Peacock, 78, of Richmond and Dresden passed away on Tuesday, June 27, 2006, after a long illness.

He was born on April l, 1928, in Airdrie, Scotland, the son of James and Catherine Peacock.

He attended high school in Rhode Island. Shortly after graduating he joined the Army. He attended Wire Chief School 8'h Army Sig C Yokohoma, Japan, and became a wire chief instructor. He received the World War II Victory Medal and the Army Occupation Medal, Japan. After his discharge he enjoyed stock car racing in Lonsdale, R.I. He also very much enjoyed hunting, fishing and his grandchildren. He will be deeply and sadly missed. His wife, Nina Lepuschenko Peacock, predeceased him.

He is survived by his sons, James B. Peacock and wife Constance of Dresden, and William Peacock of China; his daughters, Elizabeth Cook and husband Jeffery of Rochester, N.H., Robin Beasley of Rochester, and Jessie Thompson and husband Lt. Col. Charles Thompson of Virginia; his sister, Cathy Goudreau and husband Joseph of Lincoln, R.I.; three grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren, six stepgreat-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Brunswick-Verlyn Edna Thayer, 74, of High St. Bath passed away on Wednesday, June 14, 2006 at Mid Coast Hospital.

She was born March 7, 1932. Daughter of Walter and Lillian (Dunbar) Desjardins of Hampden, Maine.

She married John Walter Thayer Jr. of Bath on November 10, 1952. She helped her husband build three houses where they made one of the houses their home to raise their three children.

She loved to go fishing, hunting, camping, walking her beloved beagle, Abigale and spending her vacations at the family cottage on New Meadows or at her son’s camp in Greenville.

She retired from Stinson Canning Co. after 37 years.

She was predeceased by her husband John Walter Thayer Jr., April 22, 2006, her parents and her brother Orel Desjardins of Bowdoin.

She is survived by her children, John W. Thayer III of North Bath, daughter Sandra Sleeper and her husband Mark of Woolwich, daughter Paula Arsenault and her husband Mark of Arrowsic, sisters Pauline Lillis and Violet Higgins of Syracuse, NY, sister Lillian Bouvair of New Hampshire, brother Roland Desjardins of Sabattus, brother Russell Desjardins of Bath, granddaughter Melissa Sleeper of Wiscasset, grandson Mark Sleeper Jr. and his wife Anna of Wiscasset, grandson Justin Thayer and his wife Mandy of Bath, grandson Mason Thayer of Bath and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, June 20th at 2pm at the 1st Baptist Church 851 Washington St. Bath with Pastor Rolfe officiating. Burial will be at a later date.

Augusta-Peter L. Benner, 70, died June 6, 2006, following a brief illness at MaineGeneral Medical Center.

Peter was born in Gardiner on January 21, 1936 the son of Julie and Lewis Benner.

He served in the United States Army during the Korean War in the military police. Peter also worked in law enforcement for 32 years in Augusta. He retired in 1998 from Progressive Distributors as Chief of Security.

Peter was an avid gardener. He enjoyed raising animals and was an expert horseman. Peter spent his life surrounded by people, animals and children that he loved and who loved him. He worshipped his two dogs Simon and Bear who are lost without him.

He is survived by his loving wife of 25 years Betty of West Gardiner, stepsons Leigh Gagnon of Florida, Mark Benner of Gardiner, stepdaughter Michelle Carnahan of Tennessee and grandson Jason Carnahan of Tennessee. He is also survived by two honorary granddaughters Ashley Wark and Jessica Harris of Augusta who gave him unlimited love and joy, three brothers Eugene Benner, Walter Curtis and George Curtis.

Over the years he has touched many lives. He loved people and was always trying to help others. Peter will be missed by many and remembered by his sense of humor and giving nature. At his request there will be no funeral services. There will be a private graveside burial at a later date.

Richmond-Wallace Price Umberhind, 83, of the Alexander-Reed Rd. passed away on Friday, June 2, 2006 at Amenity Manor in Topsham with his family by his side.

He was born on May 10, 1923 in Richmond, the son of Lister and Agnes (Anderson) Umberhind. He attended Richmond Schools, graduating from Richmond High School in 1940.

Wallace proudly served his country during WWII in the United States Army. He worked a good portion of his life as a dairy farmer on his farm in Richmond. Wallace later worked as a logger and operated his own saw mill.

He was a past selectman for the Town of Richmond.

After 50 years of being single he met and married Elisabeth Muller-Bongers of Munich, Germany and together they enjoyed traveling and nature. Wallace also enjoyed working in the woods and riding his Indian motorcycle. He meticulously built a new home not far from the old farm that he and his wife would live in.

Wallace and Elisabeth had a love for the land, so much so that, with the help of the Nature Conservancy, he sold 80 acres of his land to The Land For Maine Futures, an organization that will protect it for generations to come.

Wallace was predeceased by his parents, a sister Madelyn Loon, brothers Erlon, Lloyd and Lister Umberhind Jr. He is survived by his beloved wife Elisabeth of Richmond, stepson Michael Bongers of Germany, nephew Ronnie Loon of Richmond, nieces Joyce Tome of Bowdoinham, Janet Brawn of Bowdoinham, Cheryl Pickett of Richmond, Lorane Umberhind of Sebago, Barbara Umberhind of Richmond, Amy U. Mish of Massachusetts, Jennifer Umberhind of Maryland, several great nieces and nephews.

Augusta- Gerard A. Tardiff, 50, of Augusta died peacefully Thursday, May 25, 2006 at Maine General Medical Center in Augusta after a courageous battle against liver cancer.

He was born in Augusta on March 24, 1956, the son of the late Victor C. Tardiff Sr. and Theresa (Breton) Tardiff.

Gerry was a self-employed professional painter prior to his illness. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, Harness Racing and watching sports with his brothers. He loved life and he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

Gerry was a loving father to two children. Survivors include his daughter Crystal (Tardiff) Caron of West Gardiner, his son Gerry Tardiff Jr. who works in Africa as a Development Instructor, their mother Cecile Tardiff of Virginia, two grandchildren Tyler Caron and Kaleb Caron of West Gardiner, his sister Lorraine Wilson of Belgrade; brothers Victor C. Tardiff Jr. of Chelsea; Rodney Tardiff of Chelsea; and Michael Tardiff of Chelsea, his best friend and long-time companion Diane Nickerson of Augusta and her daughter Jennifer Nickerson of Portland and by several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and special friends.

ORR'S ISLAND -- Robert Weatherill Winchell, 94, of Brunswick and Orr's Island, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his Island home on Wednesday, May 10, 2006. By his side were his five children and his sister, Jeanette.

He was born in Medford, Mass., on Oct. 28, 1911, son of Thomas Riley Winchell and Louise Margaret (Weatherill) Winchell.

Bob attended Newton Country Day School in Newton, Mass., and graduated from Bowdoin College in 1934. He was sales manager and vice president of the Allen Quimby Veneer Co. in Bingham, and was instrumental in developing a division of the company which built a line of Bristol sport fishing boats.

He was the loving husband of Janet Gregory Winchell who passed away last year.

The Winchells have summered on Orr's Island for generations. Bob was an avid sailor all his life and enjoyed nothing better than sailing the coast of Maine on his yawl, INDRA, with family and friends. He was a founding member of the Orr's-Bailey Yacht Club. He skied and played tennis well into his 80s, and was a member of the Meadow Tennis Club of Orr's Island. Bob will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.

He is survived by his five children, Charlotte Johansen of Palo Alto, CA, Diane Winchell living at Orr's Island, Margaret Villa of Martha's Vineyard, Greg Winchell of Winthrop, and Thomas R. Winchell II of Martha's Vineyard; a sister, Jeanette W. Short, of Brunswick; ten grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

Richmond-Donald L. Waltz, 82, of Pleasant St. passed away on Thursday, May 4, 2006 at Maine Veteran’s Home, Augusta.

He was born on March 14, 1924 in Richmond the son of Frank and Sadie (Berce) Waltz and attended Richmond Schools.

Don proudly served his country in the Army Air corps during WWII in the European Theater.

He retired from VA Hospital at Togus in 1979 after 33 years of dedicated government service.

Don loved to play golf and to spend the summers camping with family and friends. He enjoyed making woodworking projects with his brother Ervine and good friend Leslie Seekins.

He was on the board of directors for the Bowdoinham Federal Credit Union and the Richmond Utilities District for many years. Don was a life long resident of Richmond. He was also a loving father and husband.

Don was predeceased by his parents Frank and Sadie (Berce) Waltz, beloved wife Geraldine (Lizzotte) Waltz, Daughter Madeleine Ann (Waltz) Huff, Brother Ervine Waltz, Sisters Beatrice Webber and Viola James. BOWDOIN — Frederick Andrew Merrill, 68, died unexpectedly Thursday, April 27, 2006, at his home. He was working with his tractor, as he always did, and there was an accident. He died doing what he loved to do.

He was born on Aug. 27, 1937, the son of Dwight and Anina Merrill.

He was a disabled Vietnam veteran, having served in three different tours. He was a great American soldier who fought for his country.

After his service, he was a firefighter in Florida and also spent years driving big rigs all across the country. He spent a great deal of time working in excavation as well. He loved his tractors and tools. Everything that makes a man a man, he did. His daily routine consisted of tinkering with his equipment and tools.

For his friends and family, his friendship will live on forever.

He was a soldier, a father and a dear friend to anyone who knew him. He spent his remaining days living with Eric Sheen of Bowdoin.

Surviving are two sons, Richard Merrill and Jesup Merrill.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at the West Bowdoin Baptist Church Cemetery.

She was born in Litchfield on July 26, 1915 the daughter of John and Jennie (Jordan) Huntington.

Helen graduated from Litchfield Academy class of 1935.

She was a member of Litchfield Corners Congregational Church and longtime member of the Richmond Post 132 American Legion Auxiliary.

Helen retired from Geiger Bros. of Lewiston after 22 years of dedicated service.

She was very active in summer softball, receiving a plaque, reading Number 1 Fan.

Helen was predeceased by her beloved husband in 1988 William Howard, daughter Constance Bourgoin, brothers Mike Huntington, Horace Huntington, Percy Huntington, Floyd Huntington, Nathan Huntington, George Huntington, sisters Marion Babb and Clara Hayes. She is survived by her son Vincent Howard and his wife Faye of Richmond, daughter Sylvia Tracy of Turner, 5 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Richmond-William Garrett Schanck Sr., 81, of Westwood Acres Rd. passed away on Monday, April 24, 2006 at Maine General Medical Center Augusta.

Born on November 14, 1924 in Little Silver, New Jersey the son of the late John Leon and Mary (McFarland) Schanck, Sr.

Bill was a very active in many clubs and organizations including; the Swan Island Yacht Club and American Legion Post 132 in Richmond, Past Master of Friendship Masonic Lodge #7 of Chepachet, RI and Junior Warden of Caeseca Masonic Lodge in Keyport NJ, past president of the Glocester Lions Club, former member of the Glocester Country Club and driver for the Chepachet Rescue all in RI, Raritan Hose Fire Co. Keyport NJ, Chairman of the Foster-Glocester School Committee in RI and past Board member at the Richmond Health Center. He was a member of the Dutch Reformed Church in Keyport and the Chepachet Union Church in RI.

Bill proudly served his country in the United States Army Air Force during WWII as a pilot. He worked with his father and brother at Schanck and Sons Oil Co. in Keyport, he was the Manager of M. Rosenberg's Oil Co. in Chepachet, he was the Maine Area Supervisor for McDonalds Corp., and was Owner/Operator of Schanck Service Co. in Richmond.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 56 years Arvaline Jo Lambert Schanck, two of his sons, 2nd Lt. William G. Schanck Jr. and Leon C. Schanck and his brother John L. Schanck Jr.

Bill is survived by sons M.Jeffry Schanck and his wife Kathleen of Rhode Island, John M. Schanck of Richmond, and a daughter, Mary Arvaline Schanck-Wasilewski of Richmond. Nine grandchildren; Jennifer, Jedediah, Kate-Lynn, Justin, Kaleena, Zekiel, Nicole, Bonnie, Melanie and two great-grandchildren; Garrett and Aiden. Also, his sister-in-law, Norrine Schanck and nieces Pati Doerler and Jean Galloway of New Jersey.

A celebration of Bill's life will take place on Wednesday, April 26th at 6pm at Richmond's American Legion Post 132, Carding Machine Rd. Richmond.

Portland-John Walter Thayer Jr., 76, of High St. Bath passed away on Saturday, April 22, 2006 at Maine Medical Center with his family by his side.

He was born in Lewiston on September 30, 1929 the son of John and Flora (Crosby) Thayer Sr.

He enjoyed spending time at the family cottage at New Meadows River where he lobstered with his father and son. Walter loved hunting, smelt fishing, boating, gardening, planting flowers, sharing crops, Boston Red Sox and watching deer in the back yard. Walter also loved walking his dog Abigail and especially spending time with family and friends camping, birthdays and holidays.

Walter worked for Hyde Windless, the Coal Pocket, BNAS Bowling Alley and retired from Bath Iron Works.

He was predeceased by his parents, sister Carol Mack and brother William Thayer. Walter is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years Verlyn Thayer of Bath, son John W. Thayer III of N. Dresden-Passed on one day shy of her 86th birthday, April 20, 1940.

Martha was born & raised in the Hudson River Valley in NY State. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert C. Johanson in 1991 after 43 years of marriage. Martha is survived by daughter Tritia Hamilton and son Rob Johanson and his wife Jan Goranson and grandsons Carl and Goran. Martha is also survived by two of her four siblings, Elinor Johanson and John Richard Brooker of NY state.

Martha, a devoted Navy wife of 22 years, left Northern Virginia and followed Bob to Whitefield, Maine in 1968. Her 32 years in Whitefield were filled with community service. As an Officer of the North Whitefield Historical Society she was instrumental in the moving and refurbishing of the Whitefield Town House. Martha spent over 20 years as dispatcher for the North Whitefield Volunteer Fire Department and was a State delegate from the Lincoln County Republican Party.

Martha was an accomplished musician, soloist and choir director spending 15 years with the Augusta Symphony as singer and Librarian. Martha’s independent spirit was there until the very end. Her love for music, reading, nature, and creative craft and building design are some of the passions she leaves to her family and friends

Augusta - Rene P. Laliberte, 68, of 32 S&V Lane passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side after a long and courageous battle with cancer Saturday, March 18, 2006. He was born in Augusta March 15, 1938 the son of Edward and Lillian (Gagnon) Laliberte.

He was predeceased by his parents. Rene is survived by his loving wife of 50 years Rosemary. His sons Jeffrey and companion Rita of Sidney, Scott and his wife Melinda of Augusta, his daughters Gail and husband Gerard Letendre of Augusta, Liza and husband Bob Brown of Oakland, and his very "Special Daughter" Michele of Augusta. Brothers Robert and his wife Theresa of Augusta, Roger of Gardiner, and Lawrence "Tarz" and wife Tonia of Richmond. He is also survived by the lights of his life, his Grandchildren: Tori and her husband Jason, Maegen, Jesse, Johnny, Chad, Cody, Jeremy, Jenny, Hilary and Jon. His Great Grandchildren Colton Lee and Myah Jaye. Numerous nieces and nephews.

"Gramps" will be greatly missed by the grandchildren, they will forever hold dearly his endless miles of rides over bumpy roads to camp, the turbo button in the van, his scary camp stories, Rack a Boo Bob, Three Toes, The Mountain Man and the "Blue Jeep". Gramp was easily excitable, he enjoyed cranking up the children, especially at Christmas, as they would eagerly await Santa and the reindeer bells, wondering who would get to tear open his presents as he would wildly jump up and down, of course the children anxiously reciprocated.

Rene was self employed for 40 years as a well known local flooring installer, earlier days were spent on the Augusta Police force.

He was an avid harness horse racing fan, loved his camping and hunting trips to Moosehead lake and was an outstanding Amateur boxer attaining the title of Golden Gloves champ in the 50's. Most recently he thoroughly enjoyed spending many hours woodworking.

At Rene's request there will be no services.

A celebration of Rene's life will be held from 2:00 - 5:00 at the Augusta Country Club Rt. 202 Manchester, Maine Friday March 24, 2006.

DRESDEN -- Hazel Marie Moody, 67, a lifelong resident of Dresden, died on March 4, 2006, at Augusta Rehabilitation Center, Augusta, after a long illness.

Hazel was born in Dresden on Feb. 15, 1939, a daughter of Leroy and Ellen (Bickford) Robbins. She was the next to the youngest child of 14 children. As one of nine girls, Hazel was considered one of the "little sisters."

Hazel attended schools in Dresden and graduated from Bridge Academy. She married Horace "Win" Moody on Dec. 26, 1959. During their long marriage, Hazel committed her life to raising her family and, especially, her youngest son, Donald. Her special care of Donald has been truly remarkable.

Hazel's deep interest in and love of local history has led to her compiling many records about local cemeteries. She was a fount of information and was always able to direct you to the right person when she didn't know the answer.

Hazel also served many years as town treasurer, as well as excise-tax collector in earlier years.

Hazel is survived by her husband, Win, of Dresden; three sons, Horace "Pudge" Moody Jr. and wife, Brenda, of Pittston, Daniel Moody and wife, Sherry, and Donald Moody, all of Dresden; five grandchildren, Aaron Moody, Adam Moody, Ashley Moody, all of Pittston, and Danielle Moody and Kristen Moody, both of Dresden. Also surviving are three sisters, Ida Sweeney and husband, Ralph, of Dresden, Christie Lambert of Freeport and Louise Huntington of Hallowell.

Richmond-Robert Percy O’Brien, 65, resident of Kimball St. died February 24, 2006 in Poland, ME from injuries suffered in an automobile accident. He was the beloved husband of Ann O’Brien and devoted father to Meghan O’Brien.

He was born in Waterville on January 24, 1941 the son of Roberta Hackett and Percy O’Brien. Bob attended schools in Waterville, ME and Media, PA.

Bob was known for his culinary skills and often acted as caterer for friends and family. He was a charter member of the Augusta Harley Owners Group (HOG) and served as Director for two terms. Bob was also a member of the American Legion, the Long Beach, CA Masons, and San Diego Police Reserve. He was an avid participant in drag racing.

Bob retired from the United States Navy as a Chief Petty Officer in 1977, including three tours in Vietnam. Following the Navy, he continued his education at University Maine in Augusta and was a Veterans Caseworker for Senator W. Cohen. After graduation he worked as a Quality Assurance Department Project Engineer for Bath Iron Works where he was assigned to the China Shipbuilding Program in Taiwan, where the family lived for three years. When Bob retired from BIW he worked seasonally at L.L.Bean for four years followed by Dumont Engineered Systems in Monmouth. Bob was currently working for Perry Johnson Registrars, of Michigan, as an ISO Auditor.

Bob was predeceased by his parents, sister Marilyn, first wife Peggy Winzenreid in 1969, and sons Bobby and Danny. He is survived by his wife of twenty-eight years, Ann O’Brien, of Richmond, ME; and children Meghan O’Brien, of Portland, ME; Jennifer O’Brien Maharrey and son-in-law Dave and grandchildren Allison and Matthew all of Royal Palm Beach, FL; Becky O’Brien and partner Shirley Coleman of Surprise, AZ; Valarie O’Brien of Wilmington, DE; Sherry O’Brien Mullen of Laurel, DE; two sisters, Patricia O’Brien Van Orman and brother-in-law Fred Van Orman of West Gardiner, ME and Roberta (Honey) O’Brien Moore and brother-in-law Bill Moore of San Antonio, TX; and in-laws Peggy and Jed Dutton of Vineland, NJ; Betty Kay and Tom Bell of Moorestown, NJ; and Bobby and Mary Williams of Marietta, GA; and many nieces and nephews.

West Gardiner – Laura Anna Parent Ross died after a long illness, on Monday, February 20, 2006 at her home in West Gardiner surrounded by her family.

Laura was born August 30, 1926, daughter of Theodore and Mabel Parent, in Drummond, Canada and grew up in Eaton and Houlton Maine. She lived most recently in Litchfield, Maine.

Laura was a professional level seamstress who enjoyed making clothes for many friends and family and quilts for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a wonderful cook and baker and enjoyed traveling, knitting mittens and creating craft projects. She discovered an untapped talent for oil painting at the age of 65 and painted many pictures for friends and family.

Laura was a long standing member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and held many positions over the years. She was in service of her fellow man through many of her positions and continued to serve by helping those in need even when not called to do so.

Laura is predeceased by the parents, Mabel and Theodore (Ted) Parent; her husband, Olie W. Ross (97); Alice M. Lane (03); Daniel T. Ross (05) and Sandra A. Lane (05).

She is survived by brothers – Almon Parent of Texas; Herbert Parent of Houlton, Maine; sisters - Rosy Landry of North Carolina and Patsy Blinn of North Carolina; children – Nancy Tarbox of Winthrop, ME; Thaddeus of Augusta, ME; Lorelei Erskine of South Portland, ME; Martha Peterson of Provo, Utah; Rebecca Dempsey of Riverton, Utah; and Hattie Fletcher of West Gardiner, ME; most loving sister-in-law – Grace Ross-Campbell of Belgrade, ME; 31 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

RICHMOND -- Frank E. Coston Sr., 56, of River Road passed away unexpectedly on Friday, Feb. 17, 2006, at his home.

He was born in Bath, Oct. 8, 1949, the son of Norma (Fowler) and Chester Coston Sr.

Frank was a very social man who enjoyed being with family, friends and especially his grandchildren.

He was a jack of all trades; he could do about anything.

He was predeceased by his wife, Glenda Coston; his mother, Norma Coston; and his son, Michael Coston.

Frank is survived by his father, Chester Coston Sr., of Vassalboro; his sons, Frank Jr. and Donald Coston, both of Windsor; daughters Donna Hopkins and her husband, Craig, of Richmond, Greta Johansen and her husband, Scott, of Richmond; brothers Chester Coston Jr. of South China, Russell Coston of China, James Coston of Chelsea, Richard Coston of Randolph; sisters Hazel Nolf of Augusta, Mary McKenney of North Wayne, Judith Douglas of Pittston, Ruth Hughes of Monmouth; grandchildren Sharon, Thomas, Kayla, Kimberly, Michael and Julie and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Lewiston - Clifford L. Swartz 90, of College St., formerly of Texas and California passed away on Thursday, February 09, 2006 at Montello Manor.

He was born in Alberta, Canada on April 17, 1915, the son of the late Lester and Bessie (Williams) Swartz.

Cliffs career was in accounting and he loved his work. Other than spending time with his family, senior groups, close friends and church, his time was spent at his desk. He worked at the Open Door Bible Church every day until his illness at the age of 89.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife Mary Thelma Swartz, marriage of 14 years, and his first wife Florence Swartz, marriage of 49 years. He was also predeceased by his brothers Richard and Lester Swartz and his sister Claire Swartz. Cliff is survived by his brother Robert and sister Lila Schepler of California, son Rayland Swartz and his wife Jacquenline, and daughter Mary Swartz of Texas, stepchildren Howard Margerison and his wife Eleanor of Durham, Maine, Roger Margerison and his wife Susan, and Arleen Oliver and her husband Burt of California, 16 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren, 2 nieces and 1 nephew.

Gardiner-Vernon Carroll Cunningham, 77, of Gardiner died at home on Saturday 2/11/06 after a long illness.

Vernon was born on 3/24/28 in Gardiner and was educated in Gardiner schools.

Vernon was best known for his carpentry skills and enjoyed fishing and camping. He was employed by Maine General in Augusta and Gardiner in the Carpentry Shop and retired after 14 years of service. He was an active member of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints in Farmingdale.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Patricia Dostie Cunningham and his 4 children: Wayne C. Cunningham and his wife Donna of Chelsea; Gail A. Richards and her husband Donald of Rockport; Peter P. Cunningham of Livermore; Susan M. Gove and her husband Michael of Gardiner. He is also survived by his 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

At Vernon’s request no public service will be held. The family will be holding a private service at Kincer Funeral Home in Richmond.

BATH — Huldah Barnes Peck Donnelly, 100, formerly of Port Jervis, N.Y., died Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006, at Hillhouse Assisted Living.

She was born Aug. 15, 1905, in Hornellsville, N.Y., a daughter of Herbert and Helen Kuebel Barnes. She graduated from Arkport High School and Geneseo Normal School. She taught for 20 years, primarily in Port Jervis schools.

She enjoyed participating in community drama theater, bowling, bridge, traveling, walking, audio books, listening to "Jeopardy!" and playing trivia.

She was predeceased by her husbands, Walter Chadwick Peck, who died in 1952, and Marcus E. Donnelly, who died in 1968.

Survivors include a daughter, Judith B. Peck Gray and her partner, Horace Wallace, of Bowdoinham; two sons, Peter B. Peck and his wife, Barbara, of Keuka Park, N.Y., and Stuart B. Peck and his wife, Jeanne Coplin Peck, of Brooktondale, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Her ashes will be scattered and memorial services will be held at the convenience of the family. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Richmond-Geraldine “Gerry” Waltz, 86, of Pleasant St. passed away on Tuesday, January 31, 2006 at Richmond Elder Care with her beloved husband by her side.

She was born in Lewiston on February 2, 1919 the daughter of the late Harry and Margaret (McDonald) Lizotte and attended local Lewiston Schools.

Gerry worked for the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Togus for many years as an administrative assistant.

She enjoyed camping with family, knitting and being with her grandchildren. Gerry was also a longtime member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Richmond.

Gerry was also predeceased by her daughter Madeleine Ann Huff, brother Harry Lizotte Jr., and a nephew Richard Lizotte. She is survived by her husband and best friend Donald Waltz of Richmond, son Donald Jr. and wife Michelle of Berwick, grandsons Scott Huff of Rochester New Hampshire, Michael Waltz of Richmond, Jonathan Waltz of Berwick, granddaughter Donna Waltz of Berwick, twin sister Madeleine Lizotte of Richmond, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Family and friends are invited to call on Thursday, February 2nd from 2 to 4pm and 6 to 8pm at Kincer Funeral Home with prayers of the departed being offered at 7pm.

AUGUSTA -- Drusilla Budden Call, 93, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 29, 2006, in Augusta.

Dru was predeceased by her husband, Ephriam Call.

She is survived by her sister, Eleoda Freytag of Cumming, Ga.; nieces Carolyn Shaffer of Matamoras, Pa., and Jean Pavlich of South Carolina; nephews Robert Freytag of Cumming, James Freytag of Monroeville, Pa., and Ronald Budden of Bangor; cousins Susan Smith of Flowood, Miss., and Anne Tomlin of Crystal Beach, Fla.; and 15 third-generation relatives to whom she was Auntie Dru, as well.

Born in Greenville Junction on Nov. 3, 1913, she was a survivor who loved Moosehead Lake, the color pink and black Labs. She hunted and fished and made the best doughnuts ever.

Family will gather in Greenville in the spring for burial.

Richmond-Mildred A. Knight of Front St. died on Thursday, January 26, 2006 at Maine General Medical Center in Augusta after a brief illness.

Millie was born in Somerville, Massachusetts on September 12, 1928 the daughter of Giles and Clara (Wilcox) Skinner.

She moved to Richmond as a young girl and considered it her home for the rest of her life. She married Donald W. Knight Sr. on Jan. 3, 1948. During her husbands 28 years in the Navy she accompanied him whenever possible to various places throughout the United States and abroad, including Alaska, Italy and Newfoundland.

Millie was involved in the Navy League and the Officers Wives Club. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She took great pleasure in being a mother and homemaker. Millie loved music and enjoyed singing and had a love for animals.

Millie and her husband enjoyed 30 years of retirement from the service before his death in February of 2002.

She is survived by sons Donald W. Jr. and his wife Denise of Lisbon Falls, Norman G. and his wife Kathy of Richmond, daughter Guli A. Knight and her partner Bob Neron of Topsham, 5 grandchildren, 1 great grandson, Sisters Connie Densmore of Winthrop, Jackie Curtis of Lisbon Falls, several nieces and nephews. Millie was predeceased by a sister Marion Umberhind.

TOPSHAM — Wilber Alvin Cooper, 90, died at a Topsham nursing home Monday, Jan. 16, 2006.

He was born June 29, 1915, a son of Alton and Enza Green Cooper. On April 20, 1946, he married A. Louise Smith.

He graduated from Farmington State Teachers College in 1938 and attended the University of Maine. He served in the Army Corps of Engineers during World War II and received several ribbons.

He was a bridge painter, taught math and science at Colburn Classical Institute and retired in 1978 from the Maine Highway Commission.

He was active in the Richmond Historical Society, Richmond Days, Richmond Alumni Association, Richmond Sewer District, and the Dresden-Richmond United Methodist Church, where he was a speaker, usher and Sunday School teacher and superintendent. He was a member of the Richmond American Legion and the Friends of Merrymeeting Bay. He received the 1986 Sally Hoyt award for outstanding community service.

He enjoyed the Richmond Players and writing and performing skits.

Survivors include a son, Alvin Cooper of Ballston Spa, N.Y.; a daughter, Carolyn Cooper Case of Brunswick; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services have been arranged by the family. Burial will be in Richmond Cemetery in the spring. Arrangements are by Kincer Funeral Home, Richmond.

Litchfield-John W. Polley, 89, of Huntington Hill Rd. passed away unexpectedly on January 16, 2006 at his residence.

He was born in Wales on April 14, 1916 the son of George and Eva (Ridley) Polley.

John enjoyed gardening, farming, raising chickens, and his ponies.

He was a self employed farmer most of his life. John also worked for Webster Rubber of Sabattus for many years, Maine Egg of Greene as a foreman and Giroux’s store in Wales as a manager.

John was predeceased by his parents and beloved wife Gwynneth Polley in 2001, granddaughter Patty Leavitt, brothers Ralph, Maurice, Forrest Polley, Blaine Mitchell, sisters Gertrude Wright, Beatrice McDonald and Mildred McDonald. Survivors include his daughters Sandra and husband Charles Anair of Mt. Vernon, Jackie and husband Peter Richards of Bowdoin, Sharon and husband Charles Gagnon of Van Buren, Bernita and husband Lawrence Hall of Litchfield, sons Donald and wife Lorry Polley of Wales, Douglas Polley of Litchfield, 20 grandchildren, 3 step grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, 7 great great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
