Donald Frederick Emmons, Sr.
Brunswick-Donald F. Emmons, Sr., 94, of Theodore Dr., passed away early March 18, 2007 following a stroke.
Don Emmons was born February 14, 1913, in Bowdoinham, ME. The son of Benjamin Owen Emmons and Yvonne Dostie Emmons, he was the eldest of five children. Educated through the eighth grade, he left school so he could work to support his family upon his father’s death. Despite having no formal higher education, Don loved to learn and this was a passion he carried through his life.
As an adult, Don worked as a welder for Bath Iron Works in Bath, ME., and at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. He met and married Juliet Banville. They lived in Topsham, Richmond, Freeport, Taylor Pond and Biddeford, until they moved to the San Francisco bay area in 1964, where he worked at Mare Island. Juliet passed away in 1966.
In 1969 he married Evelyn Bartelt and they settled in Santa Rosa, CA. Not one to sit still, upon retirement from Mare Island, Don had a small private business of building residential lawn sprinkler systems and doing handyman work for neighbors and friends. He and Evelyn purchased a recreational vehicle and traveled the country together, often driving from California to Maine each summer. They enjoyed taking a different route each time and stopping to visit family and friends along their journey. Evelyn passed away in 2006.
Survivors include his sisters, Bertha Sylvain of Freeport and Venise “Pinky” LaChance of Brunswick; son, Donald F. Emmons, Jr. and his wife Darlene, of Hampden; daughter Donna M. Grant of Scarborough; stepdaughter Bonnie St.Claire and her husband Lee, of Lake Havasu City, AZ; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
