2025 Obituaries
John Patrick Hurley, Jr.
John Patrick Hurley Jr., 60, of Richmond, ME and Venice, FL, lost his short fight with pancreatic cancer on April 20, 2025. He was born on September 20th, 1964 to John Hurley Sr. and Marion (Moody) Hurley. John graduated from Richmond High School in 1982 and worked at Bath Iron Works from 1987 to 2002 before starting his own business, Hurley Yard Works. He was an avid hunter and champion clay pigeon shooter, he enjoyed being outdoors, and taught many years of hunter safety. He was a member of the Richmond Sportsman's Club, Masonic Village Lodge #26, Gardiner Elks and Eagles Clubs and a regular performer at Richmond Players shows.
John spent his spare time hunting with his family, goose hunting with Gerald in CT and fishing on the Kennebec and Myakka River. He enjoyed playing horseshoes, pool, darts, and always enjoyed drinking a cold one with whoever would join him. John had knowledge about many things, making him a popular handy man throughout his life to whoever needed him. You could always find him tinkering on his tractor, rescuing his girls stuck on a four wheeler or snowmobile, or riding around Ramblers Rest on his golf cart. His daughters were his world, but that spot was recently taken over by his grandson Camden.
Although John was a tough guy, he had a tender heart, there was never a dog or cat his girls couldn't convince him to keep. John never turned down a fight, but the cancer fight was one he couldn't win. He welcomed anyone in his home, in both Richmond and Venice, and always let his daughters have friends over for slumber parties; there were never too many people in his company. Whether he was deep frying a turkey or starting a fire, he always had his guitar on hand and knew how to have a good time.
He was predeceased by his father, John Hurley Sr., Grandparents; John and Phyllis Hurley, and Clarence and Marion Moody. He is survived by his loving wife Melisa (Lambert) Hurley of 15 years, daughters: Shelby, husband Nate Bodge and grandson Eben; Tara, husband Adam Rhea and grandson Camden; Kayla, husband Devin Grover and granddaughter Kensley and a bonus son Anthony Marson and his family. Stepchildren: Paul Lambert and wife Colleen; Jasmine and husband Kent Leonard; and Kendra Lambert and partner Scott Trask, as well as many step grandchildren, sisters Cindy Hurley, Cheryl Lancaster and husband Paul, who he considered a brother, and their children: Devon, Brandon, Brooke and Bryanne, his great nephews, and many cousins who held a special place in his heart and we can't forget his best "golden girl", Bella.
We would like to give a special thanks to Brian, Mitch and Mark for helping his family fulfill one of his final wishes and bringing him and Melisa home to Maine, as well as his great friends Marty and Diane, for their endless help and friendship over the last 12 years.
A memorial mass will be held at St. Ambrose Church in Richmond on Friday, May 2nd, 2025 at 10:00am, with a celebration of life to follow at 31 Hurley Drive(off Langdon Rd), in Richmond Maine.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice in John's name.
Bette Jean Chapman
Bette Jean Chapman (Shields), 66, of Richmond, Maine, passed away unexpectedly in her home on April 20th, 2025. A beloved mother, grandmother and friend, Bette will always be remembered for her loud and boisterous personality and her complete selflessness to her family and friends.
Bette loved her children Joel, Rachel and Issabella. She also loved the times she was able to visit her son and daughter in law Katie overseas in the United Kingdom, and to see her grandchildren there; Poppy, Maisy and River. Bette was also very close with her daughter in laws mother and stepfather, Allison and Steven. Bette also cherished the time she was able to spend with her daughter Rachel's boys; Basil, Finnian and Jude. Bette spent most days piecing puzzles together with her mother, Madeline and spending time going on adventures with her daughter Issabella. Bette was devout in her Christian faith and chose to live her life born again and not tied to any specific church, although she had been a member of the Drum church previously.
A quote picked out by her son Joel, by Mary Elizabeth Frye "Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there, I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glint on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn rain. When you wake in the morning hush, I am the swift, uplifting rush of quiet birds in circling flight. I am the soft starlight at night. Do not stand at my grave and weep. I am not there, I do not sleep. (Do not stand at my grave and cry. I am not there, I did not die!)." Is a perfect representation of Bette's spirit and the way she would want us to think of her now that she is no longer here in the flesh.
Bette is survived by her mother Madeline Tozier of Richmond, her brother Gary Shields and his wife Debbie Shields of Vassalboro, her brother Weldon Shields Jr., and his wife Julie Shields of Richmond, her Sister Debbie Bodge and her husband Robert Bodge of Richmond, her sister Mary-Ellen Carney of Richmond. Her son Joel Chapman and his wife Katie Chapman of the United Kingdom (children; Poppy, Maisy and River), her daughter Rachel Portela and her husband Matthew Portela of Dresden (children; Basil, Finnian and Jude) and her daughter Issabella Chapman of Richmond.
Bette is predeceased by her father Weldon Shields Sr., of Farmingdale, her Uncle Charlie Rittal and his wife Mildred Rittal of Dresden. As well as beloved grandparents who she spoke of often, William Rittal and his wife Gladys Rittal of Dresden.

Gil was a fan of the NY Giants and when he wasn’t wearing a Richmond Bobcat hat, he was wearing his NY Giants hat.

Charles Harlan Wright
Charles Harlan Wright, 68 of Woolwich, Maine passed away on Sunday, March 2nd, 2025 after a battle with cancer.
He was born September 9th, 1956 to Beverly E. (Carleton) and Harlan S. Wright of Woolwich. He attended Woolwich Central School and was a 1974 Graduate of Morse High School.
At an early age he worked alongside his Dad on the family farm, sawmill and rototilled many gardens. After high school he worked in the woods where he was either sawing down trees or hauling out logs. He always loved working in the woods.
In the 1980’s he started his career at Bath Iron Works. He really enjoyed his job working as a rigger and often said he “got to work with some real good people.” If you had the pleasure of working alongside him, you knew he loved a good practical joke. Couldn’t he laugh, a laugh so distinct and infectious you couldn’t help but join in. If you knew Chuck, you knew he was a worker. Along with working full time on second shift at BIW, he worked many years with his cousin and long-time friend Ray Soule of Ray Soule Excavating in Wiscasset.
He enjoyed watching football, auto racing and playing a good game of cribbage. His true passion was woodworking. He spent many hours in his workshop listening to the radio. If you touch the dial to turn it down, you better have something good to say. He would spend hours building whatever his daughter had scribbled out for him in his notebook, and together they built and designed nearly every wooden piece of furniture in her home today. As long as it was made with Oak and he had the measurements, he could build anything. Heaven forbid you chose to paint it, he was sure to make you aware of his disapproval.
Often referred to as a “Jack of all trades, Master of none.” From helping with his Grandson’s dirt bike, his nephew’s racecar, or anything his daughter needed a hand fixing. He enjoyed being helpful and offering his opinion.
