Born on April 23, 1936, to Emery Sutherland and Lucy (Young) Sutherland, Alton grew up with a strong sense of service, family, and a passion for the great outdoors. He proudly served his country for 23 years in the United States Air Force (1954–1977), a commitment that reflected his discipline, courage, and love of country. Following his military service, Alton brought the same dedication to his work at Deep Sea Ventures (1977–1980) and later to the State of Maine Department of Education, where he served from 1980 until his retirement in 2000.
A true outdoorsman, Alton found joy and peace in the simple pleasures of life—gardening, fishing, hunting, camping, softball, bowling, and especially watching his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren play sports. His presence on the sidelines and in the bleachers was a constant source of encouragement and pride to generations of his family.
He was predeceased by his parents; his brothers Fritz, William, and David; and his sisters Ellen Springer and Leola Scott. Their memories remained close to his heart throughout his life.
Alton is survived by his beloved wife, Margaret of 66 years, and his sister Marion. He leaves behind his children: Barbara and Peter Daigle, and Alton Jr. and Sue; grandchildren: Alton III, Thomas, Amy Balduf, James Daigle his wife Katie Daigle, and Natasha Daigle; and great-grandchildren: Stephanie Balduf, Eden Balduf, Alyssa Daigle, Cameron Daigle, Brayden Daigle, Haley Daigle, Stella Sutherland, Luke Coolidge, Merrick Delany, and Elliot Daigle—each of whom brought immeasurable joy and pride into his life.
A viewing will be Saturday, the 14th, from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m with a service to follow at 2:00 p.m held at Kincer Funeral Home 130 Pleasant Street, Richmond, Maine. Internment will be scheduled at a later date with the State of Maine Veterans Cemetery, in honor of his proud military service.
