Augusta- James Richard Gavett, 83, of North Road, Mt. Vernon, passed peacefully at Maine General Medical Center in Augusta on 08/09/2024.  Jim had battled the effects of diabetes for several years.

Jim was born in Portland on 12/18/1940 to Virginia Caton and Richard Gavett.  He married the love of his life Joni Bunker in 1962.  Their union was blessed with two sons Ricky and Randy.

Jim attended Gardiner schools then proudly served as a paratrooper with the 100st Airborne in Germany from 1958-1962.

Jim retired after 35 years from the Maine Turnpike Authority.  He also drove school bus for Maranacook sports teams.  Jim enjoyed camping, family gatherings, his beagles, bird watching, and all things Chevy, especially his blue Camaro.  Jim attended the New Life Church in Oakland.

Jum was predeceased by his son Randy in 1984.

He is survived by his much-loved wife Joni, son Rick & wife Ruth Ann, Cody & Kourtney, Ashley, and his great grandchildren Amelia, Hazel & Michelle.  Jim is also survived by his sister Nancy and husband Kenwood, nieces and nephews Kellie & Rod, Kim & Marvin, Holly, Kristin, Zach, Abby and Nathan.

A celebration of Jim’s life will be at a later date.
