BRUNSWICK – Lieutenant Colonel John H. Alden of Brunswick, Maine, died on August 10, 2015. He was born the son of Dwight M. and Ruth E. (Roberts) Alden in Needham, MA on November 7, 1935. In 1957, John graduated from Bowdoin College with an AB Degree in Economics, married Marilyn Elizabeth Burns of Brunswick, ME, his dearly beloved wife for more than 52 years, and received a commission as an Armor Officer in the US Army. He was a veteran of the Vietnam conflict and served his country with distinction for 24 years.
Following retirement from the army in 1982, John resumed his studies, obtaining a Master of Business Administration Degree from New Hampshire College in 1986. That same year, he joined Maine State Government as a Personnel Management Analyst, where he worked until July 2000.
Colonel Alden was a member of the Military Order of the World Wars, the Military Officer Association of America and the American Legion. He served as a Director and President of the Coastal Humane Society from 1986 through 1989. John resided in Willow Grove for more than 27 years. He had many friends there and held various positions in the Willow Grove Home Owner’s Association.
John is survived by a daughter, Susan L. Alden, MD, her husband, Robert A. Hauser, MD, and their children, Allison and Evan Hauser, of Valrico, FL; and a son, John D. Alden and his wife, Rhonda, of Las Cruces, NM; a brother, William M. Alden and his wife, Karen of Glasgow, MO; and numerous nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his wife, their eldest daughter, Elizabeth R. Alden; his parents; his eldest brother, Richard F. Alden; and his sister, Ruth E. Ham.
At Colonel Alden’s request, there will be no visiting hours. A private burial service will be held in Needham Cemetery, Needham, MA, at a later date.
