Sylvester "Les" Kane
RICHMOND - Sylvester “Les” Kane, 69, of Richmond, ME, formerly from Uniondale, NY, passed away peacefully in his home on April 14, 2015. He was born on June 3, 1945 in Jamaica, Queens, NY, to the late Sylvester and Anna Kane. On April 26, 1969 he married the love of his life, the former Nancy Hayes, who survives. They were preparing to celebrate their 46th wedding anniversary.
In addition, he is survived by his son, Thomas Kane of Topsham, and his daughter, Kelly Grib of Richmond, daughter-in-law, Lori Kane and son-in-law, Bud Grib; and the loving, devoted grandfather of Cassandra, Patrick and Kaitlyn.
Les served his country as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army, having served in Vietnam.
A bus driver and mail carrier, Les was employed with the Uniondale School District for 43 years, retiring in 2006. He loved the students that he worked with and was honored to serve as a Civil Service Union President for 12 years.
Along with his father and his son, Les was a proud and dedicated member of the Uniondale Fire Department, serving as Captain of Manor Company 3 and a member of the Exempts and Antique Society. He valued and cherished the “Brotherhood” of the department and treasured the many friendships that were made during his time there.
As always, his family came first. In 2007, Les and Nancy said goodbye to the life they were comfortable with and loved in New York and moved to Maine with their children and their families. He never hesitated to tell his entire family how much he loved them and how very precious they were to him.
