Walter C. Shorey
SHEEPSCOT - Walter C. Shorey of Sheepscot passed away in his home of 60 years, on Thursday April 9, 2015 at the age of 87. He lived in Nobleboro throughout his childhood, the son of Sumner and Carrie Shorey.
Walter was born on July 4, 1927 and went to local schools and graduated from Lincoln Academy, graduating in 1944. After high school he went to Bath Iron Works and learned to weld. He then served in the United States Navy for 8 years and was a Seabee. When he returned from the Navy, he started Shorey Welding Company in the 50’s and sold his business in the 60’s. He created a very successful carpentry business for himself, building/remodeling over 300 homes and businesses.
Walter donated his time and was very active in many local organizations. He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW, Sheepscot Volunteer Fire Company for over 50 years, 17 years for the Miles Memorial Hospital Rummage Sale, and 65 years as a Grange member and managing the building maintenance. He donated his time and materials to the Hill Church in Sheepscot, serving as the custodian for over 40 years. Walter also helped with numerous church functions and dinners. He received Volunteer of the Year award in 2006 from Damariscotta-Newcastle Lions & Rotary Clubs. Walter was a very kindhearted person, who would help anyone in need. He enjoyed spending time with his family, and was especially fond of his great grandchildren. He will be remembered for his kindness, generosity and love for his family and community.
Walter was predeceased by his wife Virginia Carol Shorey of 61 years.
He is survived by his four children and spouses: Peter & Debbie Shorey of Nobleboro; John & Grace Shorey of Alna; Shelley Shorey & Peter Andrew Payson of Rockland; Susan (Shorey) & Tim Ferrarotti of New Hartford, CT; grandchildren, Peter Shorey, jr & Becky Norling, Joshua Shorey, Brandon Shorey, Brianna Shorey, Brian Ferrarotti, Adam Ferrarotti and Chris Ferrarotti; and two great grandchildren, Gabriela Karis-Shorey and Lyle Shorey.
A celebration of Walters’s life will be held on Friday, May 8th at 2:00 pm at the Sheepscot Valley Church, followed by a reception at the Sheepscot Clubhouse. Please come and share your memories of Walter with his friends and family.
