Virginia “Carol” Shorey
Newcastle-Virginia “Carol” (Verney) Shorey, 80, of Sheepscott (Newcastle), died on May 14, 2013 at her home. She was born July 27, 1932 to John Waldo Verney and Selena May (Gilby) Verney in Bath, Maine. Carol was very active in the communities of Newcastle and Sheepscott for many years: belonging to the Garrison Hill Grange for 67 years, the ladies circle for 50 + years &The Ladies Home Extension for 40+ years. She was a long time member of the First Congregational Church and served on the board and was the treasurer for many years of the Sheepscott Cemetery. Carol lived in the Village of Sheepscott her whole life; growing up there and then raising her own family there. All who knew her understood what a kind-hearted person she was. She loved her family and her community – and was always helping others. Carol enjoyed gardening, flowers, sewing and crocheting. She had a love for animals and donated regularly to the local animal shelters Carol graduated from Lincoln Academy in 1949 and held office as the secretary of her class. After graduation she worked at the First National Bank for many years, until her children were born and became an amazing homemaker and mother. Carol was predeceased by her Mother: Selena May (Gilby) Verney, Father: John Waldo Verney, two brothers: Victor Verney and Clayton Verney, a sister: Evengeline (Verney) Jordan. Carol is survived by her husband: Walter C. Shorey- of Sheepscott, two sisters: Audrey (Verney) Krah of Waldoboro & Madeline (Verney) Pierce of Damariscotta, one Brother: Richard Verney of Alna, four children and spouses: Peter & Debbie Shorey of Nobleboro, John & Grace Shorey of Alna, Shelley Shorey & Peter Andrew Payson of Rockland, Susan (Shorey) & Tim Ferrarotti of New Hartford, CT, Grandchildren: Peter Shorey, jr & Becky Norling, Josh Shorey, Brandon Shorey, Brianna Shorey, Brian Ferrarotti, Adam Ferrarotti and Chris Ferrarotti, and one great granddaughter: Gabriela Karis-Shorey A celebration of Carol’s life will be held on Friday, May 24th at 10:00 am at the Sheepscott Valley Community Church, followed by a reception at the Sheepscott Clubhouse.
