Wynnefred Shepard

Georgia-Wynnefred Scott Shepard, 94 of Richmond, Maine and Okeechobee, Florida, passed away March 11, 2011 in Southeast Georgia Health Services Hospital, Brunswick, GA after a short illness.

Ms. Shepard was the widow of Captain Leon P. Shepard of the Maine State Police, Richmond, Maine, married November 22, 1945. She was born March 30, 1916 at Wilton, Maine and the daughter of Hadley R. Scott and Alza Howland Scott. Educated in Wilton schools, Wilton Academy, Bliss Business College and University of Maine, Augusta, Mrs. Shepard taught school several years at Litchfield Academy and the school systems of Litchfield and Richmond, Maine. She also worked as a secretary and court reporter serving the Maine State Police Crime Lab and Forensic Laboratory for 10 years as well as the Women’s Reformatory and a 1945 Maine State Legislative Session.

Mrs. Shepard was a well-known soprano soloist having studied with Mary Manter of Waterville and James Quillian of New York City. She studied Opera at the Vienna Opera House in Austria and languages in Munich and Rome. She gave many concerts and appeared as soloist at many national and state conventions and with numerous colleges and orchestras. She was a well known church and oratorio soloist at Palm Beach, Florida, Phoenix, Arizona, as well as Rome, Italy and multiple locations in Maine.

Spending time with her many friends was one of Wynnefred’s most enjoyable pastimes. She was a member of Eastern Star and a golden Sheaf Member of Franklin Grange and Enterprise Grange #48. As a member of the Dresden Richmond United Methodist (DRUM) Church in Richmond, Maine, she offered encouragement to many and shared many stories of her worldwide travels. She occasionally filled in as choir director and was very involved with the Women’s Society of Christian Service and United Methodist Women.

Ms. Shepard was also a very active member of the First United Methodist Church in Okeechobee, FL. Her greatest joy came from her singing and sharing her love of music.

She is predeceased by her husband Leon P. Shepard, brother H. Raymond Scott, stepdaughter Hannah Frank and step-grandson Leigh Shepard. She is survived by a sister Dorothy S. Dow of Brunswick, GA, a sister-in-law Arlene Scott of Bath, Maine, six nephews and nieces, stepson Murray L. Shepard and wife Marion A. Shepard, step granddaughters Catherine Ahearn and husband Brain Mansir and Beth Norton and husband George Norton.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 25 at 1:00 pm at the First United Methodist Church in Okeechobee, Florida.

Graveside Services will be conducted May 28, 2011 at 11:00 am at the Shepard Plot at the Litchfield Plains Cemetery, Litchfield, Maine.
