Joan C. Smith
BRUNSWICK – Joan C. Smith, 78, died on Monday, August 23, 2010, at a Brunswick hospital from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
She was born in Brunswick on August 11, 1932, the second of six children of Maynard and Estelle (Martin) Munsey.
She graduated from Brunswick High School in 1950, and completed the business administration certificate program at Plus-Gray School of Business in 1970. She became a licensed real estate salesperson in the late 1970s, working in real estate and property management in Colorado Springs. She retired in 1995.
She married Michael F. Hurley in 1958 and Warren C. Smith in 1959.
Joan loved to travel and had lived in Italy, Germany, Texas, California, Colorado, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Ohio before returning to her hometown of Brunswick just ten days before her death. She was a talented seamstress and also enjoyed reading.
Survivors include two daughters, Roxanne Jones and her husband Donald, of Harpswell, and Joanne C. Eschweiler and her husband Jeff of Indio, Calif.; grandchildren Daniel Eschweiler of Palm Springs, Calif. and Dawn Eschweiler and her fiancé Ed Hodge and their son Ian of Indio, Calif.; two sisters, Dolores Williams of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Elaine Griffin of Columbus, Ohio; and two brothers, Stanley E. Munsey and his wife Lee of Sheffield, Alabama, and Richard B. Munsey and his wife Martha of Brandon, Mississippi.
She was predeceased by a brother, Emery Munsey, in 1995, and her beloved Siamese cat Anthony, in 2007.
Burial will be private at the Varney Cemetery with a memorial service to be held at a future date. Donations in her memory may be made to the Coastal Humane Society, Range Road, Brunswick, ME, 04011.
