Helen Arlene Arndt
FREEPORT - Helen Arlene Arndt, 86, of Pownal Road, Freeport, passed away peacefully at home, Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009.
She was born on October 13, 1923, in North Sterling, CT, daughter of Christina and Ray Smith.
On July 25, 1942, she married Christopher Arndt in North Sterling, CT. They lived in Danielson, CT, until 1972, when they moved to Freeport.
During WWII, Helen worked as a “Rosie the Riveter” while her husband was serving in the South Pacific. When he returned home after the war, she stopped working to raise her two small children. Later, she became a Stanley Home Products representative. Helen enjoyed crocheting, crafts, cake decorating, and canning. Her favorite activity was spending time with her family, especially her many great-grandchildren.
Helen and her husband moved to Freeport in 1972 and began Marcraft, Inc. with their son, Harold, where she operated rope and twine machines. After her retirement, Helen enjoyed working part time at the deli and behind the liquor counter at Bow Street Market, where her husband, Chris, was a meat cutter.
During later years, Helen and Chris traveled extensively across the United States, spending winters in Arizona. They also enjoyed taking trips on their Honda Goldwing touring motorcycle.
Surviving are her son, Harold E. Arndt, of Freeport; a daughter, Arlene J. Houle of Lisbon; one sister, Dorothy Smith, of Danielson, CT; many neices and nephews, six grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren. Helen was pre-deceased by her husband, Christopher Arndt; her brother, Carl Smith, a sister, Ruth LaFantasie, and a great-grandchild, Logan Sweet.
At Helen’s request, there will be no memorial service. In the spring, she will be laid to rest with her husband at a graveside service in Wescott Cemetery, Danielson, CT.
