Charles C. Dow
BRUNSWICK — Charles C. Dow, 89, of Brunswick, died Sunday, Nov. 9, 2008, at Mid Coast Senior Health Center after a short illness. He had been a resident of Thornton Hall Assisted Living Facility since 2004.
He was born in Portland, a son of Clinton and Bertha (Bell) Dow. He later moved to Jay, where he attended local schools and graduated from Livermore Falls High School in 1937. He was a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service, retiring from the post office in Livermore Falls in 1974 after 36 years. He formerly resided in Livermore Falls, Jay and Winthrop before moving to Topsham in 1999.
On Sept. 20, 1940, he married the former Irene Loon of Winthrop. She predeceased him in 2005.
He was an avid gardener and was known for his beautiful flower gardens. He was a communicant of St. Charles Borromeo Church in Brunswick.
Surviving are two daughters, Suzanne Austin of Brunswick and Diane Deane and her husband, James, of Holden, Mass.; a brother, George and his wife, Agnes, of Florida; three grandchildren, Adam Austin of Harpswell, Alan Deane and his wife, Jennifer, of Westborough, Mass., and Andrea Young and her husband, Michael, of Tyngsboro, Mass.; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife of 64 years; a sister, Gertrude Belanger of Jay; and a son-in-law, Michael Austin of Brunswick.
A funeral Mass will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Church, 132 McKeen St., Brunswick. Burial will be in Glenside Cemetery in Winthrop. There will be no visiting hours at the request of the family.
