Memories From Mom
Beulah went to a one room school house at the end of the dirt road. Sometimes her brother would pull her on a sled to school in the winter. From there she went to the village school in Jefferson and on to Gardiner High. At 20 yrs old she married Ed Madden and together raised 4 children. She was a homemaker and their yard was always full of the neighborhood kids who were always welcome.
When her youngest was in Jr. High she went to work at the school, leaving because they had a home in Port Charlotte Fl where they spent 4 or 5 months. In the summer everyone went to camp at Sand Pond Litchfield where every Sunday was water skiing all day with a big lunch from the grill with thier 4 children and many of their friends.
It was really cold outside and the snow was deep. I remember crying to go out with my brothers and sister to play but my mother said "no you're too little you might get lost in a drift. That was probably true but I also probably didn't have any warm clothes or boots to wear out in such weather. I remember hiding inside my fathers sheepskin lined coat with him. He'd button me right inside with him and I was sure no-one could see me. Maybe they couldn't, I was pretty small. My mom would pretend to look for me and finally find me all squirrely and happy. My dad would be cold and
smell of newly cut wood and pitch. I still love that smell.
Recently Madison asked her Nannie Great if she had any life advice and without hesitation she replied "Just be yourself" as she patted Maddie's hand.
Great advise from a woman who lived and left her way.
