Richmond-Elwood " "Smiley" Ross Pinkham, 81, who retired from BIW, passed on January 14, 2014 at Togus.

"Smiley", the son of Irving and Marion (Hersom) Pinkham was born on November 28, 1932 in Bath, Maine. He grew up in Richmond and attended Richmond schools.

In 1950 Smiley joined the Army and was involved in the Korean War. He requested and was granted a transfer to the Air Force in 1955 where he served with pride until his discharge in 1960. While in the military he traveled a great deal enjoying time spent in many places. He often spoke of how much he enjoyed his time in the Air Force. When discharged he returned home to Richmond.

Red was his favorite color. He always insisted upon owning and driving a red car. Smiley loved dogs. The family has many special memories of his dogs as well as special times spent with them. His dog, Lucy is still with us and will be cared for and loved by his sister Beulah and her husband Henry.

Sports played a large part in his life.       He was an avid supporter of all RichmondHigh School sports and attended all RichmondHigh School games. When he was not attending games he was watching them on TV. Auto racing was another favorite and he loved attending the races with his brothers.

Smiley was very patriotic and very proud of his military service. He is a long time member of the American Legion Post 132 in Richmond.

Smiley is preceded in death by his mother (who he cared for until her death in 1988), his father and three brothers Paul, Robert and Albert Pinkham.

He leaves two sisters, Beulah and her husband, Henry Dube of Richmond; Carolyn Spencer of Richmond; many nieces and nephews and many great nieces and nephews.

Services will take place in the spring.
