David C. Holt

BATH — David C. Holt, of Bath, formerly of Brunswick and Topsham, passed away peacefully on Dec. 3, 2013, after a long and courageous battle with cancer with his loving family at his side.

David was born in Newburyport, MA, on April 8, 1937, to Daniel and Rose (Colby) Holt. He was raised in Georgetown, MA, and attended Georgetown Schools. He was a graduate with the class of 1955 at Perley High School, Georgetown. David, or Tubb as he was affectionately called, was proud of his late game heroics in the 1954 high school basketball tournament, sinking a half court shot as time expired to send Perley High to the State Finals in the Boston Garden.

As the son of Depressionera parents David was industrious at a very young age. At age 12 he would hitchhike from Georgetown to Salisbury and set up bowling pins for 1 cent per frame at a local bowling alley. He remembered after working two 16- hour days and sleeping in the attic in between, he brought home more money than his parents that week.

After graduating high school Dave joined the Navy with his good friend Bill Prescott in June of 1955. Dave served as a Damage Controlman on the USS Salisbury Sound (AV13) and later on the aircraft carrier USS Midway (CVA41). After the Navy Dave put his charismatic personality and natural selling ability to good use joining Electrolux as a door-to-door salesman. For the next 45 years he had an extremely successful career, a continuous top performer who won incentive trips around the world. He won numerous sales awards during his career and many more lasting friendships.

Dave loved the simple things in life. Mowing the lawn on a sunny day, monitoring the weather, bird watching, betting on the horses, playing cards and taking scenic drives. He loved to swim and was known to swim from Small Point to Popham and back in the same day. He taught all of his children to swim at an early age and they share his love of the water.

Dave had an infectious smile and a contagious laugh and was known for his practical jokes. You couldn’t spend time around him without laughing and having fun. He had the natural ability to put people at ease. He was the life of the party and relished the role, the first one on the dance floor and the last to leave. He was mischievous and fun loving, you could see the playful boy dancing in his eyes even in his final days.

In his later years he devoted much of his time and energy to his grandchildren, an immense source of pride for him. He never missed an appearance at an athletic event, school play, award ceremony, even as his health declined. Dave loved a good game of cribbage and his door was always open for friends and family to stop in and visit. Dave loved a great meal and passed his love of food on to his family.

Dave was a devout Christian with strong faith, always signing cards and notes with scripture. He would want his number of days on earth known, it was 27,998. Dave found a second home with Pastor Dan Coffin and the fellowship of parishioners at Small Point Baptist Church. Dave was an extremely generous man to those he knew and loved.

Dave was predeceased by his parents, Daniel Holt and Rose Holt Choquette, beloved wife Christina (Tino) Holt, son Daniel Nicol and brother Daniel Holt. He is survived by his beloved sister Bonolyn (Sissy) Page and husband Robert of Georgetown, MA. Brother Greg Choquette of Hamden, ME. Four children, Colby Holt and wife Kim of Jacksonville, FL. Tamara Holt of Bath, ME. Carol Perkins of Otisfield, ME and David and Cori Holt of Durham, ME. Six grandchildren, Casey Holt of Jacksonville, FL, Savannah Rice of Bath, ME, David and Logan Holt of Durham, ME, Mathew and Twila Perkins of Oxford, ME. Dave loved his nieces and nephews, Kevin and Cathy Holt, Brenda Holt and Mike Stinson, Brian Page, Wendy Page and Wes Rutledge, Jesse Choquette and Michael Holt.

A memorial service and celebration of life will be held Saturday, Dec. 7, 1 p.m. at Small Point Baptist Church, 1754 Main Road, Phippsburgh, ME. All friends and associates are welcome to attend. Condolences can be expressed online at kincerfuneralhome.com.

Joan S. Fickett

Florida-Joan Silvia Fickett, 80, of Bowdoinham and Zephyrhills, Florida, died on September 5, 2013.

She was born on April 25th, 1933 the daughter of Mae Hunton and Frederick L. Hunton

Joan enjoyed Family, Friends, Cooking, Music, Dancing, Housewife, and Loving Aunt to many nieces and nephews.

Our Mother dedicated her life to her children and family. She was the first one up in the morning and the last one to go to bed, always providing the best home. Memories of Joan were her remarkable strength and courage to always be available when needed. Her boys (Mike, Scott and Todd) were rambunctious, energetic fellows, always finding ways to experiment and frequently learning hard lessons with falls, bruises, stitches and broken bones. Mom was always there to wipe away the tears and help mend the wounds. Her daughter (Teri) was the apple of the family’s eyes. Being the youngest and only girl, Teri was Mom’s best friend. Mom and Teri went everywhere together. Mom was at her best cooking for family gatherings, holidays, birthdays and daily responsibilities. She frequently played the radio, sang and danced for fun and laughter. She was close to her nieces and nephews and in her early years spent much time with her sister Lillian’s children, where she spent summers in Gurnet and winters in town Brunswick. Her home in Bowdoinham was her pride and joy. She loved the beauty of the house and plenty of room for everyone. Our comical memories of Mom, was that the beds were made before we got up and her attachment to her vacuum cleaner. Mom was always needling the boys to “grow-up”; but would always laugh at our ridiculous antics. We remember Mom as a happy person, with a positive presence and a love for life.

Mom grew up in Portland, Maine and was a 1952 Graduate of Deering High School.

She worked at Bowdoinham Community School.

Joan was predeceased by Mae Hunton - Mother, Frederick Hunton - Father, Sisters; Lillian Luce-Smith, Barbara Campbell, Helena Celano and Karen McGrade , Brothers; John Hunton and Frederick Hunton.

As a lay pastor, he preached and held services at nursing homes in the area and at Popham Beach chapel and Hermit Island in the summers. He also filled in at many American Baptist churches throughout the state as a supply preacher. Sewall loved to praise his Lord through song, and sang "specials" in many of his services. Around 1967/1968 he was called to fill in at the Newcastle-Alna Baptist Church and ended up serving there for thirteen years. It was a high point in his life and he has many very fond memories of the people there. He was affectionately called Pastor P by many there. Later, along with his eldest son James, he went to fill in at the United Baptist church in Richmond which is now named Shepherd of Faith Ministries. He continued there until he retired. Sewall enjoyed being able to help those in need, especially when he could do so anonymously. He is survived by his wife Ramona, and six of his sons, James, Micheal, Brian, Timothy, Mark and John. His son, Sewall L. Pearson the 2nd passed away several years ago. He also is survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as one sister, Geraldine Heddon. There will be a celebration of Sewall's life at the Newcastle-Alna Baptist church in Alna, Maine on Sunday, January 13 at 2:00 which will be followed by a reception downstairs.

Reginald Heron

Reginald Heron, of Dresden, Maine, let go of his long battle with cancer on December 15, 2012. Reg was born in Marseilles, France, in 1932, to British parents. With them, he fled the approaching war in summer 1940, across France and Spain to Portugal, where they had to wait several years before being able to evacuate to England. Thus, his formal schooling began rather late, in wartime England, at Vinehall prep school in Devon. He was a fine athlete, an especially strong swimmer. Other early fascinations included classifying butterflies (and he was delighted to recognize their close relatives when he got to Maine) and ham radio, which contributed to his next step, a diploma in electrical engineering from Faraday House in London. In London’s bookstores he soon chanced on discussions of the Bauhaus, which totally captivated him, and he determined to pursue studies in photography. He made his way to the US and, after various employment detours, received his BS in photography from the Institute of Design of the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1963, followed by an MS in 1966. He served in the US Army, which sent him to Germany, “because they learned I was fluent in French,” after which he resumed his career in photography. From 1966-70 he was an Assistant Curator for the International Museum of Photography at the George Eastman House in Rochester. Teaching, however, would be his passion. He began with several visiting positions, at the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, the Department of Creative Arts at Purdue University, and the Department of Fine Arts at Indiana University. In 1970, his beloved mentor Henry Holmes Smith hired him full time at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. He taught there in the School of Fine Arts until he retired in 1997. During much of that time he also worked, and trained many a student, as field and object photographer for the IU archaeological excavations in Greece, where he met his wife, K.D. Vitelli.

His black and white images, especially those shot at night and often in Greece, are powerful and beautiful demonstrations of his mastery of the science and materials of photography, as well as his sharp eye and appreciation of light and form. Examples of his work are in numerous collections and publications, catalogues, and specialist archaeological volumes. But he was first and foremost a teacher and persistent researcher of the photographically impossible, remembered for his high standards, endless knowledge with which he was totally generous, a beguiling sense of humor, and the ability to push students way beyond their perceived abilities, with great gentleness and humility.

Soon after he and his wife moved to Dresden in 2003, he began working with digital images and color. This later work, while superficially different from most of his earlier art, shows the same sharp eye, attention to composition, experimentation and “understanding the materials” that students recall so vividly from his silver classes.

He is survived by his wife, several cousins in Europe, and many dozens of photography students for whom he was not only mentor, but also often a second father. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Society for Photographic Education (www.SPEnational.org ).
